I think employers should be able to be "fattist" as the fat lady in our place smells and is always in the loo doing stinky number twos!

The floor above ours in our offices is inhabited by a PR agency. Based on the stinkiness of our loos, all the skinny minny PR girls up there are permanently on Atkins.

I would of course like to lose weight, but dieting makes me miserable and unhappy.

Well counting every calorie that goes in my mouth doesn't make me jump for joy either.

It's a decision every woman makes. You can eat what you like and be a size 16. I doubt you'd be unhealthy just generously proportioned.
I was a skinny child, and a slim teenager but gradually put on weight in my late 30s and 40s, going on the contraceptive injection hasn't helped either.

It will get worse. Wait until you hit the menopause. My Ma (never a slim woman) put on about 2 stone in her fifties. She now resembles a small stately galleon in full sail

I dont think size 16 is !!!!!!. I have loads of friends around the 16ish verging on the size 18 mark who ten years ago were all a size 12. They look OK to me. They are my friends and I love them

It is just, where do you draw the line?

At some point you are going to have start eating less or start shopping in Evans

But us fatties don't live as long. So that's lots of savings on pensions.

Good point, we should encourage smoking as well - more taxes to pay for the NHS and also helps out with the pension funding issues.

I have an issue with flying. The main cost is fuel and the amount of fuel is directly related to the weight of the plane. At check in you should stand on the scales with your luggage and be charged per kilogram.

When you fly on little planes, they do weigh you and your luggage together at check in.

So if you're lardy, or pack heavy stuff, be careful on local flights (for example, Land's End to St. Mary's) because some check-in bloke will be yelling, "250lb!" across a crowded room when you want to maintain your illusion that you actually weigh 10 stone and have only packed an overnight bag.

There are usually a couple of people arguing that they don't want to be weighed, I've noticed.

Thank you ninky, this is the point I was trying to make. I am obese according to all the charts (not morbidly obese however!) but I have an active lifestyle - I cycle to work every day in summer, in winter I walk (which is 50 mins x 2 a day). I am 45, my cholesterol is normal, my blood pressure is normal, I have no medical conditions. On the rare occasions I see my GP he has never commented on my weight, in fact he usually praises me for cycling (as I go in with my helmet).

I would of course like to lose weight, but dieting makes me miserable and unhappy. I was a skinny child, and a slim teenager but gradually put on weight in my late 30s and 40s, going on the contraceptive injection hasn't helped either.

your walking and cycling will keep you fit to an extent but if it's weight loss you are after have you tried interval training? sounds technical but basically just means short (and i mean a minute or less) or intense effort followed by active recovery. so for example sprint jog sprint jog. doing just 15-20 minutes of such a couple of times a week can make a big difference. try it for a month and you'll see. when i started doing intervals i was amazed at how much improvement - not only weight loss but surprisingly endurance, resting heart rate etc -you see. in fact i had to scale back because i was getting too stripped and the marathon runner look physique is not one i aspire to.

Trust ninky to seek to intellectualise why fat people are fat.

Fat people are fat because they choose to consume more calories than they expend through exercise. It's pretty simple.

We can justify their choices all we like; we can blame conditioning or society or the mass media; we can blame evil corporations; we can blame class. Whatever, the end result is the same. Energy in, energy out.

but where is the source of that choice? you might as well blame the earth for orbiting the sun.

My advise to fat people is to eat less and exercise more.
