I am going to get xbox live soon and was wondering is the subscription for the console or the 'user' as the girlfriend says see wants to use it as well and a dont want to have to buy 2 subs.

You will need subscription per gamertag.
They sell quite cheap on ebay - they email you the code!

goto ebay home page and select USA then search for xbox live subscription. With the dollar so weak against the pound you will pay about 55% less than the uk price. The code works from wherever you buy it in the world!
I did this and i got 12 months for £18, game and dixons are charging £39.99, if you buy it from the USA it is emailed within an hour!

We have got the normal xbox and pay ntl for xbox and have been for 3 yrs but never used it we have the long cable as well, do not know how to get started?0

First of all stop paying NTL for their xbox service - it's not necessary. What is it - £2 extra per month if I remember?
Instead go out and buy a router for around £30, connect your PC to one port and the xbox to another port and you'll be online in minutes.
You can get a lot of help here specifically for xbox on NTL.
