This is the drive on offer: Writemaster TS-H552U
If you want this Samsung model, as opposed to the NEC and LG models, then it is worth buying it from Aldi since I know of no other supplier that provides a 3-year warranty.
The drive alone costs £47: Aria0 -
Aldi have this one in their leaflet for next week. Seems to do all the formats at up to 16x for DVD (theoretical maximum speed) and can link over either USB (not sure if it's USB2.0 though) and Firewire with both cables and software supplied. Would sure if your PC is either in warrnaty (and they're funny about opening it up to upgrade) or if you've got a laptop.

Don't worry about Gericom - I'm using a Gericom laptop from Aldi at the moment and I've no reason to suspect it's inferior to any of the big brands. The three year warranty says it all. You benefit from other people's brand snobbery.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0

Aldi also have other PC stuff coming up from 17 March so if anyone is considering the purchase of a new base unit, TFT monitor, scanner, wireless keyboard/mouse or graphics tablet in the near future then they may wish to hold off until more details of exactly what's on offer are known (the Aldi flyer shows these products but they're wrapped so you can't see exactly what's on offer).0

Just a reminder that these should be in-store tomorrow.
Cheers

In a previous note to this someone said that you need to have a good power supply for this. This will sound thick but how will I know?? My Aldi still has the internal Samsung DVD writer for sale so I've waited until this exernal drive becomes available but I really haven't a clue which one to go for. I run Windows XP Pro and have USB 2.0 and a Firewire port. Any ideas please?Ne illegitimi carbunculi tibi in facie sint0

Got one of these, they only had 3 left after 15 minutes :-o
Someone bought 4! I dont know what they would use these for, as I dont believe you can burn to them all at the same time.
Works fine on SuSE linux 9.2 using firefire cable.
Mine does not have "SAMSUNG" on the front though and is registered as:
TSSTcorp' 'CD/DVDW TS-H552U' 'US03' Removable CD-ROM
Although it looks just like the package, without "Samsung" on the tray.
Internal Samsungs are now only £49.99, I saw them today.0
