Does anyone know if this is a good deal? You can get a similar spec NEC internal one for about £35, which i know is a good buy. I've never heard of the manufacturer Gericom so am a bit wary.

They aint like for like though, yes you can get the NEC for £35 but you pay more for an external one. I have heard of Gericom before I think Aldi stocked some Gericom hard drives in a while back.

It's a German company that makes most of the laptops and desktops for Aldi. Last year i bought a DVD burner from Aldi, it had Gericom on the box. On closer inspection of the actual burner, it was a Pioneer with the Gericom logo on the tray.

To compare ebuyer have some external driver but these are more than the Aldi offer. Don't wory about the drive it will be known manufacturer. Even KNOWN Brands like HP acually use OEM drives from Philips. Sony used to do this with Ricoh drives until they got their own plant and designed the DRU-500.

Plus there is no P&P as you buy it from a store.

The NEC is great for an internal drive but you are not comparing like with like.

To put a DVD Drive like the NEC in an external case and PSU connectors costs about £40 for the case cables and PSU. Remeber that DVD writers use more power than HD or CD writer (laser is more powerful) the Sony Drive draw 2amps! So you need a beefy Power supply for the external drive.

3 years plus warantee and customer helpline is great, a good deal.

Try https://www.svp.co.uk for cheap NEC drives - prices seem to be dropping by the week! Register for their Buyers Club - and every now and then they will do 99p shipping weekends!
  • Gericom is a German Phone
  • I just bought an MSI (a decent name in the PC world I believe, certainly hope so, I have my motherboard from them too) external USB2 dvd writer for £65 including delivery and VAT from Dabs. It came with Nero OEM and "Cyberlink dvd solution" cd's. Looks a really solid and smart piece of kit. Also, referring to an earlier post, it runs off mains and not the PC's power supply.
