Why did you choose pay as you go?

Why PAYG and what type of user would you class yourself ?

I chose Giffgaff because it was better value than most SIM only contracts.
  • I was a heavy user on PAYG and found even with the various bundles available on different networks i was still spending far too much [Sometimes £60+ per month], I changed to contract with a shiny new phone for £35 per month and is the best thing i ever did.

I'm on O2, I too up £10 which gives me 300 texts and 500megabytes. I spend £5 of the ten on the YourO2Numbers bolt-on which gives me 1000minutes/texts to ten numbers. The other £5 covers calls to other networks (I normally have a little credit left over every month).

I get an O2 Treat of 15 free picture messages, O2 Reward of 10% back every 3 months (£3), an O2 Surprise when I top up (this month was 30extra minutes), O2 More sends discount offers, an O2 Money card which is a safe way of purchasing online and so on.

So £10 a month suits my circumstances very well. and beats hands down any contract.

I'm on 3 mobile, I use zero mins and almost zero texts, yet use A LOT of data, everyone uses facebook for messaging everyone these days, and I also use email heavily, 3 mobile gives me 100% free skype and I also use that sometimes.

I get 2GB for £5 valid for 30 days, where I live I get perfect 3G signal wherever I go, I also dont always require network data all the time (as I have access to wifi in most places I frequent) therefore I only buy the data at the start of when I need it.

Another massive point for me is that I loath the crapware filled network phones, so I only buy unlocked sim free phones therefore would never sign up to a leangthy contract with a bloated phone.
  • I get unlimited texts, 100 mins and 100mb internet for £10 a month with orange. It is almost half what I was paying on contract and I only really use the texts so I can add the mins package when i expect to make a few calls...

Been on contract since 1992. Never used PAYG as contract always been better value for me.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

I use PAYG as I am a very light user. Can count on the fingers of one hand the amount of calls I make and only text a few times per day. £10 top up lasts me two or three months on average. When someone asks for my number I give my home number as I really don't want to be having calls at any time any place.

i have the same exept my treat is free messages inc pics between 7pm and 8pm each night. i vary rarley use any of my £5 remaining credit, but do do over my 300 texts at times so sometimes top up £15 to get the unlimited texts normally at christmas! thats why im loathed to get a contract phone! think im gonna have to thou as i can afford the initial payout for a sim only iphone! :(
  • I'm a very low user of calls. Perhaps 20 minutes a month but around 250MB - 500MB of data a month since I had my smartphone.

I have an old fashoned phone for calls (on 3) and use the (free) data on that occasionally tethered to a laptop. The smartphone has the £20 for 6 months data deal from T-Mobile. When that runs out I'll probably get their 12 months of data with a £10 top up T-Mobile iPhone SIM deal instead. I've never told anyone the smartphone number so changing SIMs regularly is no issue.

It's a 2 box solution but cheap to run and works for me !
