best deal or best compost? I always go for the best compost at the best local price. It isn`t worth using rubbish. You should see my hundreds of wonderful healthy seedlings, plugs and young plants, all they have had is good compost, sunshine and waterbutt water. I think I usually pay about £4-5 for 50/60 litres

If I just use it for germinating then I re-use it for eg lettuces or radish in troughs

I need compost for raised veg and fruit beds. All the best deals seem to be on multi purpose compost and the blurb on the bags mention flowers, seeds and cuttings but not fruit or veg. Do I really need specific veg compost?

Homebase were £5.29 for their own make of veg suitable compost and also for Westland Organic Veg Compost 60L bags.

Once again Which? rated B&Q multipupose compost as their best buy. Not sure how much it currently is, but they usually do an offer on three 70 litre bags!
  • You could try online supplier Hallstone Direct who sell value topsoil / compost that's 50% recycled natural topsoil and 50% recycled green waste compost material - to British Safety Standards.

Sold in bulk bags - not sure on quantity - but looks like tonne bags - for those needing a lot obviously!

Cheap topsoil per bulk bag is £69.50 - (Inc VAT & FREE delivery).

Try your local recycling centre/tip. Most now make their own compost. I think they get grants for this sort of thing. Local ones around me are selling it for £1 for 50L.

Anyone seen any deals to better this on this sort of quanity? I'd buy up to *gulp* 4 or 5 of these.

I bought a couple of the lidl bags to see for myself today. I'll be opening them on saturday so I'll give feed back if its wanted. eta: I couldn't resist having a peek and opening a bag. I used it to fill a couplef troughs and I'm not impressed. No big sticks or partially rotten stuff, some little things like pine needles but a very heavy smell....like bitumin and pine?? And surprisingly lots of largish stones. :( it will do for crude purpose but certainly wouldn't want to sow into it.

Guess Lidl haven't improved their compost then....

Not seen any cheap deals online yet, the garden centre said they'd do a price so maybe they might be cheaper?

This may be called compost though its very unlikely to be a growing compost. Suitable for mulching though.
