Thank you - I will bring the sweetcorn in too. I'm on the outskirts of the town, and its a small one, so can't believe temps would be much different from one end to another!0

mine are taking over my flat the windowsill is covered in module trays, toilet rolls and meat trays all filled with seedlings

My tomatos that I have pricked out live on shelves at night and I bring them down to sit on chairs and my coffee table during the day so they get as much light as possible. My main problem, is stopping the kitten from eating them!!!!! She's such a horror -the leeks seem to be especially appealing.0 -
Seedlings and cuttings on every work surface possible in the kitchen, window sills full. Just re potted some more.0

I've been trying tomonitor temps in a slightly obcessive way this year, in my new area, so I can guage whats ''normal'' for here. I am in a rural position, the only house on a road. In either direction there are a couple of villages. Its been interesting to see the impact of a hill on the two villages to the south, making things like daffs later (and thus I guess colder) thenthe village to the north in an open place. My guess is that is tempered by shelter later in the year?
Out here mine were even later still...and these are villages proper, not small towns.

The flower seedlings are in the unheated greenhouse and seem to be doing ok, the veg seedlings are in small pots which are then inside large polystyrene boxes, i have covered bits of cardboard with foil and stuffed them in the back of the poly boxes to reflect the light so that everything doesn`t lean towards the window. I have an old drawer/sideboardy thing that i`ve dragged up to the window and the polyboxes sit on this, the window ledge has seed trays on it too.
I`ve just taken a jar with some more pepper seeds out of the airing cupboard and they have all got shoots on so they will be potted up later. I don`t know where they are going to go though as we`re full and bursting at the seams now
I did take a risk and put a handful of chard seedlings outside in a raised bed - far too early i know but they seem ok atm, i doubt that they will last as our last frosts are forecast to be late May but i`ve sown some more indoors just to be on the safe side.
I`ve lots more to plant but am having to hold off for a while. I don`t have a south facing window either - the west facing one will have to do.
If i get desperate for space then i can put the polyboxes outside in the greenhouse and cover with a plastic sheet i suppose *scratches chin*
I`m willing the weather to get warmer at night - everyone that i know things that i`m barmy but i just can`t seem to help myself
SDPlanning on starting the GC again soon

I'm just back from Homebase with 3 growbag trays. They were £9.99  reduced to £4.99. (Maybe I'm just being tight but I thought even that was dear
). I'm going to stand all my seed pots on them, like a poster above.
I also got some seed cell things with lids. Kinda like a propagator type affair but cheaper. I'm going to have seeds everywhere.:rotfl:
I started off in Poundland as they had big vegetable planter things but none of the branches near us had any....so I went to the Works bookshop (as mentioned on here) and got cheapo potato grow bags.
Just as well because when I came home, my £1 potatoes from T&M had been delivered.

They may look cool, but you are much better off with your porch.i'm a first timer. i also have used my porch. the coats are back in the wardorbes and the cheap ikea storage shelves that were going spare are in the porch. three weeks in i have seedlings glaore on four teirs of shelves.

Your porch will be much warmer, will stop all wind, won't blow away
and is free!
It also won't fry the seedlings if you forget to open the door in the morning.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Have a look at difference between gardens as well, also your own garden, at the different areas. Do a little bit of research about frost pockets and the way frost works and moves. I don't pretend to be an expert at all, but they are fascinating things to look at.lostinrates wrote: »I've been trying tomonitor temps in a slightly obcessive way this year, in my new area, so I can guage whats ''normal'' for here. It will give you knowledge about what to plant where.
A slope that goes one way will make the garden warmer, the other, colder. A hedge/wall/fence could do the same, depending on what it is made out of and where it is.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
all my seeds, veg and flowers have been growing in an unheated greenhouse since 3rd March. Had a few frosts but they all survived. Looked a little worse for wear some of them in the morning after but a little water and sun and they were on their way again. Its not even got a pane of glass in one bit. I have never used a propagator. Some seeds faired better than others and not all germinated but majority did and have been planting them on / out ever since when i have to. Just planted a load of new ones last week and only difference seemed to be they germinated quicker but again there are some that haven't and they must have had optimum conditions of late. Unfortunately i dont have much patience mainly because i do things when i have time and not when im supposed to. I have no idea if im going to be around in the third monday of May to plant out my runners so id rather do it now whilst i have time. Trial and error is the best way if you ask me otherwise youll never learn. Just received my t and m petunias. I'm sure people will say don't plant them yet because the frost will get them but ill be planting them into my garden pouches anyway.0
