Where does everyone keep their newly planted seeds?
I'm merrily scooping seed compost up into the trays of tiny pots I got so I can plant my tomato seeds....then I realised (after reading the packet) they need to be kept indoors until they have germinated.
I have nowhere to put them.
Is an unheated plastic greenhouse really no use to start them off in?
Apparently our last frost is due early may so still not overly warm outside.
That'll teach me for getting carried away with all the seed offfers on the go right now. :undecided

All the baby plants sit on any available windowsill that get a bit of sunlight. After they've germinated, the tough ones, peas, broad beans, hardy annuals, get turfed outside to an unheated greenhouse.
you need to protect tomatoes, french beans, courgettes (amongst others) from cold. Have you got no windowsill space?0 -
My tomato - I'm hopeful I may have two soon live on the windowsill. I may end up cheating and buying ready grown ones if they don't make an appearence though.
The peppers which have grown a bit sun bathe during the day and come inside at night.0 -
Nope. Our windowsills are too narrow.
(I've sown 3 different types of tomato seeds, between 25 - 40 each type)
Should have stuck to buying actual plants, I guess.Herman - MP for all!0 -

Well, you could pull up a table and sit it next to the windowsill for a few weeks. I do it to make sure the heated prop doesn't tip over

I kept getting told that some don't germinate...
...I currently have 28 tomato plants in 3" pots almost needing to go into bigger pots...
...I have another seed tray of another variety....and a 'cell' type tray thingy with another variety in it...:rotfl:
I have marigolds coming through in old strawberry plant containers...
I have mint in another pot...
Oh, and then there are the Leeks.
I'm all out of windowsills. The dining room table is finally getting some use (lots of good morning sunshine)
I DO also have an allotment too with a greenhouse/shed combi thingymajiggy - that has...
Courgettes, dwarf green beans, sunflowers, chilli's, peppers, more tomatoes () , cauliflower...
I think I too got carried away with seed buying...I've got enough to last me years :rotfl:
I've planted potatoes, onions, garlic, strawberries and beetroot outside.
I'm muchly excited Aliasojo - tis my first year at growing & I've got the bug alreadySometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...0 -
I put a bag round mind, sandwich bag'll do, and bung them into the airing cupboard until they pop their heads up and then straight into the unheated growhouse i have outside.
Its on a south facing wall to keep all my plants warm and they are thriving.:j
Make sure if you put into an airing cupboard that you check them once, maybe twice, a day otherwise, as I've found to my peril, if they grow too much in the humid environment their stems almost collapse
Whip them out as soon as they are up.0 -
Hubby cringes every February, the 4 stage industrial type shelving unit comes down from the shed, and the porch is transformed into the hanging gardens of Babylon. This is full of tomatoes, chillies, basil. coriander, chillies, cuces, aubergines, and if I have room need to start off pumpkins and squashes. The porch is only 8 x 4ft contains a table, my shelving unit, and small cupboard, all flat surfaces are covered in seed trays pots and propogators, and it's still the entrance to the front door.

Ah...I've got a pasting table in the shed. I suppose I could put that in the bedroom in front of the window.I kept getting told that some don't germinate...

Me too....that's why I planted so many seeds. :rotfl:
I started last year, I won a garden starter pack thingy and was very fond of the carrots and peas I grew.
Then when Lakeland had their end of season sale, I bought more raised bed planters than I know what to do with. I'm expanding. :rotfl: My garden is still like a building site but hey ho, I'll have planters and veg everywhere.Mrs_Domino wrote: »I put a bag round mind, sandwich bag'll do, and bung them into the airing cupboard until they pop their heads up and then straight into the unheated growhouse i have outside.
I have an airing cupboard, but that's where all my wet clothes go to dry.Maybe I could put them all on a tray on the floor for a few days then onto the pasting table. They might respond to variety.

I did have every window ledge in the house full of trays and pots however now that the weather is improving I have moved everything out to the greenhouse which is now bursting at the seams!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Good job I didn't read the packet. I've got a couple of trays of tomatoes in the greenhouse which have germinated quite nicely. I've ordered some more seeds though, so may actually read the instructions on those.0
