Where does everyone keep their newly planted seeds?

Anywhere I can...kitchen table, on window sills....near the back door. Ours have been out this week but will have to come into night so I guess the kitchen benches will have to do!0

My tomatoes are all in the conservatory on one of those long trays for the growbags. Beans and peas and sweetcorn are in the greenhouse which the courgettes and cucumber are in a mini covered greenhouse inside the greenhouse. I would also cover thebeans and so on with a big poly bag having put the toilet rolls with seeds inside in an old plastic tub with some compost in the bottom. It keeps them nice and upright I find.
How long does sweetcorn normally take to germinate - no sign of them yet, and have I planted them too soon? (1 April)0 -

I guess I just didn't appreciate the fact I needed to 'put them up' like a short term lodger.
Clearly I was being too selfish and unrealistic to want my house to stay tidy. :rotfl:I will re-assess things and see where else they can have the run of the house. :rotfl:

I'm up to my ears in seedlings as I've decided to organise a plant sale for school and have no idea how much poepl will contribute so I'm hoping to have grown enough stuff myself so it doesn't look utterly pityful on the day.
You should have told me. I could have bought some by post.
Killed two birds with one stone, saved me the bother and helped you raise funds.

No, it depends what the temps are like where you are. You need a max min thermometer and see how cold it gets at night, then keep a good eye on the weather forecast.ok,sorry to be thick,so anything can go in an unheated greenhouse,as long as covered by horticultural fleece at night.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Gosh, so will my french beans and courgettes not germinate in my outdoor unheated plastic greenhouse? Last year I did everything on the windowsills, but this year I bought the greenhouse specifically to reclaim my windowsill space!
We only planted at the weekend, so I could bring the trays inside, although they risk damage from the children more than anything else in the house!
I'm in the SE, and the greehouse is in a very sheltered spot, plus we've been having fantastic weather here at the moment (although due to get a bit colder imminently if the weather forecast is to be believed). I've not been putting fleece over them or anything, but we've definitely not had any frosts at all here for a couple of weeks at least.0 -
They may, as I keep saying it depends what the temps are like near you. I've had loads of frosts in the last two weeks, so I wouldn't germinate them outside as it gets too cold at night. Lovely during the day, but liable to rot the seed at night.Gosh, so will my french beans and courgettes not germinate in my outdoor unheated plastic greenhouse? Look up what temps different seeds need to germinate and give them it, it doesn't matter where that is, if it's in the GH then fine.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

I have a glass greenhose in a sunny spot and I've been fleecing all the tomatoes the last week. Under fleece the thermometer read 7.1C so it was pretty chilly for tomatoes. They may even go inside tonight as we're forecast lows of 3C with a frost
cold weather slows their growth and a shock like the temperatures dropping the last few nights won't be good for them
French beans and courgettes not even sown yet (i've run out of windowsill space...)0 -
OK, I think I will bring in my courgettes , pumpkins and french beans this evening and leave them on the windowsills until they have germinated. The runners are already showing signs of germination, so I will leave those out there. What about sweetcorn and carrots? Are they alright left outside? I don't have a therometer for the plastic greenhouse, so should probably get one. The lowest overnight temperature forecast in my area for the next 5 days is 4 degrees tonight, rising to 8 degrees overnight by the end of the week. I wouldn't have thought that was *that* cold, but to be honest, I don't really have a clue!0

Carrots will be fine. Sweetcorn doesnt like cold and at least could stunt the growth - id bring them in.
Do you live in a town or city? Temperatures are genrally for there so if your rural take off another few degrees.0
