To cover yourself you might want to report the accident at your local police station, it'll just go in the station log book but it gets your version of events down in writing in case anything comes of this later.

Not sure it's worth it though.
What are you going to report ? I think I might have kissed his bumper but I don't know who he was, did not get his reg.no. or insurance he did not to get any of mine. You will be popular down at he nick trying to get the woodentops to make something out of that !!

I did this. A pedestrian hit my car (slightly more serious than a bumper kiss) and fell over, loooong story which I will not get into, but think along the lines.... late night, drunks who are agressive, and you will get the picture.

I made the mistake of not getting and recording the officers number who I reported it to. So when I got a claim against me 2-3 years later I had no evidence. It ended up 10% my fault 90% his fault though.

Good grief, if he's a troll he'll be really happy: an OP about a completely trivial motoring non-event, about which nobody can do anything, and he gets 21 replies in 8 hours!!

I would definably report this to the Police. You are supposed to do so "as soon as practicable and in any case within 24 hours".

There is no requirement in law that compels one to report a non-injury accident to the police.
How do you know that the driver hasn't already reported to the Police that you were in an accident and failed to stop and exchange details? If you fail to report it, his side of the story will look more believable.

This is the very reason why the OP should report it.

Because you were just rolling forwards and hit the brake pedal a bit hard but stopped just in time, the driver didn't stop so there was no reason to think you'd hit them. Nobody in their right mind would do you for failure to stop in those circumstances.

It very much depends on how the other party reports the failure to stop.

No injury, Police won't be interested.... Been there myself.

Did the car in front drive off quite rapidly? Might be that he was uninsured and didn't want to risk being caught.

No it doesn't. What possible thing could they say to get the OP charged with failure to stop? It has to be a serious accident for FTS to even be looked at, with no marks on either car, no injuries, neither party stopped and reported anything, no witnesses...... NO ACCIDENT!

They could say anything they liked with no witnesses

"Yeah, so this guy drove into the back of my car at the lights, I didn't want to stop there and block the junction so I drove through and stopped in the bus stop but he just carried on going."

By making a report you get your version of events down and there is some proof that you have attempted to make contact and make amends for any damage you may have done.

They could yes, but nothing would come of it. There's no damage to either car, OP just needs to say they didn't know they'd hit anyone. Even if the other person gets a quote from a garage for repairing nothing, I doubt very much a claim of £0 will go through insurance. The police won't care, they'll ask the other person when they go in how much damage was caused and were they injured, they'd write down negative to both and tell them to go away.

I am frankly amazed by the number of posters posting incorrect information as "fact". (the above is just one of many).

In 30 seconds I found the facts:
    http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/section/170
170 Duty of driver to stop, report accident and give information or documents.
(1)This section applies in a case where, owing to the presence of a [F1mechanically propelled vehicle] on a road [F2or other public place], an accident occurs by which—
    [cut]
    (b)damage is caused—
(i)to a vehicle other than that [F1mechanically propelled vehicle]
    [cut]
(2)The driver of the [F1mechanically propelled vehicle] must stop and, if required to do so by any person having reasonable grounds for so requiring, give his name and address and also the name and address of the owner and the identification marks of the vehicle.
(3)If for any reason the driver of the [F1mechanically propelled vehicle] does not give his name and address under subsection (2) above, he must report the accident.

The OP knows that the vehicles came into contact but does not know whether any damage was caused.
Does anyone seriously think that the magistrates would accept that as an excuse for failing to report an accident?
