Royal Mail (Recorded Signed For) is CRAP!

I bought some clothes from Asos and wanted to return £125 worth of 2 items back and decided to send via "Royal Mail Recoded Signed For 1st Class" from my local Mailboxes..

This was on the 2nd April and when I phoned Royal Mail, they said they "have no record of it being delivered"... and that's pretty much the extent of their visibility over the package., stating that this service ONLY tracks the delivery and not the journey (or even the date it was sent!).

I was then told I can ONLY claim UP TO £46 in compensation, which leaves me £79 out of pocket! Completely gone.. Disappeared because the Royal Mail employ either incompetent baboons, or opportunist thieves.

And while some scum-bag is likely trying on these clothes, there's naff all I can do about it, and what's even more worrying is that no one will be reprimanded and hence free to do it again and again.

Not to mention the 5 quid I paid for the delivery as well!!

All in all I am shocked that Royal Mail are allowed to operate with such obscurity for a service that I was mislead to believe was of a premium grade.

Any tips/hints/empathy welcomed!

  • Im sure it does say that maximum compensation is £46 online and in the post office? Did you not read this before you sent it?
Am I entitled to compensation with Recorded Signed For™?
You are entitled to a maximum of the value of 100 First Class stamps in compensation.
For items posted which have no intrinsic value, or where there is no proof of posting, there will be compensation for loss, damage and delay of a minimum of 6 x 1st class stamps. For lost or damaged items with proof of posting and evidence of value (such as an invoice or receipt) customers will be entitled to a postage refund plus compensation up to the value of the item, with a maximum of the value of 100 First Class stamps.

If you need to send valuable items (e.g. cash, jewellery, tickets & vouchers) use our Special Delivery™ 9.00am service or Special Delivery™ Next Day service which provides compensation for valuable items. If you send items from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, there are slightly different compensation arrangements. Please contact your local sales centre on 0845 7950 950 for more details.

Why didn't you use special delivery?

You used an inappropriate service, you should have used Special Delivery, which is fully trackable and insures for up to £500 as standard

I suspect there will be little empathy and the only hints / tips will be to select the correct service next time you send anything expensive :)

Like I said, I used a Mailboxes branch to send from.. While they are approved to operate on Royal Mail's behalf, how can we be sure that Royal Mail's standards, policies and small prints are as clearly prominent in these shops as they are in the Post Offices and online?

I.e. the staff should be instructed to query the value of items you're sending when one attempts to send. Or at least point to a chart that clearly details the prices and levels of compensation possible, as a reminder.

Back to my original point, there's some schmuk dancing in my semi-expensive clothes and nothing will be done to investigate and reprimand. So it's just theft really, isn't it?

There have been some post offices that do that and there have been people on here then complaining that its none of there business. So they can't win.

Surely any reasonable person would find out full details and then select the best method of sending a valuable item.

    75p???

    Since when?

I sent a large letter to London recorded delivery on Friday and that was £1.56, and that was using a franking machine, so I don't see how a parcel with clothes in would be 75p.

It is 75p EXTRA on top of normal postage. (Think it might have gone up now)
