OP, if you have your proof of postage with the recorded delivery code on in, email care@asos.com with the details - they may be able to give you some kind of goodwill refund or discount.

Regardless of the service used, Recorded or Special, the 'expected' service has not been provided. I know a company using the Royal Mail and at least 10% of items never arrive! Postal theft is an increasing problem as well as poor quality service. One letter sent 1st class eventually arrived 23 days later.

Guys - thanks for all the positive replies!

I've learned my lesson! Not sure why I had assumed Recorded Signed For implied some sort of premium service and therefore higher insurance.. :(. My mistake.

    Live and learn.

    Cheers,

Because if it was a postie who stole it then a member of the public can't take legal action.
But you can still report them to the police for theft, and then criminal proceedings might be taken.
Postal workers are only immune from civil action.

    Really? Wow - I didn't know this...

So you used the incorrect service to send an item underinsured through the post and it's not your fault. Maybe you should have spent 2 moments actually reading what the service was.

God forbid someone expects their post to to actually be delivered let alone go untampered without having to choose special delivery.

Lost mail isn't necessarily stolen mail.If the package gets damaged and seperated from its address label then it will potentially get lost in the system(I always make sure I put my address in a different place to the label).Theft will of course happen as its human nature for some to steal but I doubt Royal Mail is any worse than any other organisation for it.

I NEVER waste money on recorded delivery- if it is important enough to be sent recorded, then I automatically choose special delivery- it is the ONLY fully tracked Royal Mail option and at my PO they ALWAYS ask the value of the item
often it's simply paperwork - but I ahve ahd bad experiences in the past when sending Recorded delivery- so never bother with it now- I think it is a rip off- as many people think (like the OP) that it affords some level of security - which in my experience , it doesn't.
