My home is a mess

I'm being naughty - should be doing work stuff atm, not browsing MSE! Got up to go to work today, walked round to the main road and it looked clear enough so set off. Just out of the village, the road got all slushy and grim, made it to the motorway roundabout which looked like the gritters had somehow completely bypassed it! I have a choice at this point - right is the shorter route but it involves going over the moors (35min in good weather). There is a slightly longer, easier route that way if the moors road is closed. Left is much longer (45 min in no traffic, usually 1-1.5 hours in rush hour) but pretty much motorway to within 1 mile of the office. I thought I'd probably go left this morning but given that both sides of the motorway were creeping along at 5mph, I decided to loop around the roundabout and head home!
I've worked hard all morning - both paid stuff and managed to fit in stripping the bed and getting that washed too. But I went to sainsbobs at lunch to get petrol (checked if elderly neighbours needed anything before I went) and still haven't got back into the work frame of mind since. Still, the meeting I was supposed to be at tonight has been cancelled so I can carry on with the work stuff all evening if needs be!
On the messy front, not doing too well. House is back to bombsite. And cold again - heating lasted 3 days before packing up! Trying to resist the fan-heater temptation and just sticking with oil-filled rads and lots of layers. Might give it a boost with the fan heater when OH comes in later. He's busy getting the living room ready for the plasterer coming wednesday - just hope he can make it in the snow. OH has snowchains and said he'd go and pick him up if needs be!0 -
Sonastin - I don`t blame you heading back home!! Sounds like the most sensible course, despite your CH being off. What went wrong there? I hope you can get it back on again soon. To be honest, if DGD wasn`t here I`d be fine with extra layers myself, but she`s been enjoying quick romps in the garden with Daftie-dog then both coming in dithering after a few minutes. I`m quite surprised at Daftie-dog going out willingly at all!
Coal man delivered half an hour ago & said the roads were pretty clear except our little patch & side roads like ours. Then DGD`s mum phoned & said they`re pretty clear there too, so she`ll be coming to collect her in a bit. Our local forecast has now changed AGAIN, and we`re not getting snowed on again till Friday (unless they change their minds in the interim.) Local schools are open again.
I am not entirely convinced... I still have the instinctive urge to make soupy things!0 -
Hi everyone, had a slow few days - upstairs is still immaculate and staying that way! Started on the kitchen but it is slow progress as SAD has kicked in bigtime and i just have no energy or oomph....
thankfully both the kids schools were open so i was able to have a very lazy day doing not a lot0 -
It's not just me that gets the urge to make 'soupy things' when the weathers like this then Emm!!
Groceries arrived at lunchtime, most of the snow has melted now but it's still very cold outside. I've made a lasagne for supper, we usually have one on a Monday night after the girls have been to tennis training, fortunately it was cancelled tonight!
Tomorrow i'm hoping to whizz round with the hoover before the school run.........;)
JxIt's a farmers life for me......:j0 -
Hi everyone not been on for a while due to sorting dd room out and other decluttering. Weather meant dd sent home early Friday. Snow showers here but the snow is melting.
Sonastain hope your heating sorted soon .
Not been having the best of sleep due to the dog wanting to go out at all hours. We are also having a tom cat visit every night. Our four cats like him and we found him on the couch with them.0 -
Hi Messies.
Donna, I do hope you feel better soon. I was just thinking about SAD the other day, and wondering if it was any better for sufferers when it`s snowy (it was when I noted the garden birds all looking much brighter with the `up-lighting` effect of the snow). But then, you have to have a decent bit of daylight to reflect up off the snow in the first place.
FW - Yup, it`s still soupy weather all right! I used up half a pack of streaky bacon, the 2nd half of a big onion, and an open pack of instant mash (all left by DS when snacking!) and with a bit of milk, marge scrapings & cornflour it made a lovely soup yesterday! Soup`s off tonight though, it`s sausages/egg & proper leeky mash.
Snookey - your animals are a naughty bunch! And I thought ours were demanding...
Today I have filled a dog-food sack with old tapes & various small plasticy items, & collapsed the cardboard boxes they were in.
Also another shopping bag of old paperwork ready to re-cycle.
I`ved moved some shelves around upstairs, and there is a small clear patch in the spare room of Doom. I am getting somewhere, but it`s so slow to clear so much carp!0 -
Evening Messies, welcome back, Rosie, and welcome to lizalloreds - intriguing name!
Donna, sorry to hear SAD has wiped you out atm, awful feeling.
Snookey, what naughty animals you have, but it made me smile that your cats had invited another for a sleepoever!
Sonastin, what a huge shame about your GCH, and you so pleased with it all, too! I hope it gets sorted soon, as no doubt you do, too.
I have to say, FW and Emms, I don't really like soup much at all, although it's wonderfully economical. I really hated stews as a kid - just can't swallow stewed beef or lamb - and soup often seems to me like liquid stew. However, OH makes a pretty good soup based on chicken, when we've had a whole bird. There's a couple at our church who make the most wonderful mushroom soup, and that's pretty much the only flavour soup I can get excited about.
So, I've been missing in action, or missing in inaction, to be precise. Too much else to be done, to be doing de-messying, but I've picked up again in the last couple of days. Two WM loads - one done and dried, one lot in now - bathroom cleaned, and the drawer with paperwork sorted, with unnecessary stuff thrown away. Also dusted the bedroom furniture - all straightforward except OH's bedside table . OH and I have recently bought (in sales), or been given as Christmas presents, some new clothes, so we're putting aside really tatty items that are really past their best. A local animal charity (through which we got our pony) collects rags towards their fund-raising, so that's where the tatty items are going once collected together and bagged. That'll clear out the laundry basket a bit.0 -
My DS is at his GF's this week as he has a week's holiday, and oh, the difference!
I've long noticed that a lot of "my mess" is when I haven't got round to relocating an item in its proper place after using it, and without DS to worry about and run after, I've been able to concentrate on keeping things in the correct place. Very enjoyable.
I've given myself a rule, I can only notice something in the wrong spot once, the second time my eye lands on it, it's got to go back to where it "lives".
In the course of doing this, quite a bit of kipple has diverted via the recycling/kitchen/outside bin , as that was the rightful home for it.
Demessy-ed a drawer of bras - some I must have had for around 20 years - and chucked those showing wear. I will have to try and find a charity similar to that mentioned earlier in the thread to take those in good condition that won't be worn again. Some are really glam, I felt quite wistful... !Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0 -
Iv just got back from walking the dog .I had thought all paths near home were clear until I got to the other side of the park and hit ice. The dog decided to pull on his lead and I ended up sitting on the ice. Lucky that he decided not to run as I dropped his lead.
Pride hurt as a bus full of people stopped to stare. Jumped up laughing and limped off. Gave my bum a good rub once out of sight of peering eyes, lol.
Emm I keep meaning to make my own soup I may try to make one this week.
Bearcub I tend to love my tatty clothes as they are the most comfy. New clothes are nice though.0 -
No, Snookey, these are REALLY tatty eg OH's shorts pyjamas all out of shape with seams falling apart, cotton polo necks with necks and wrists all worn through, and jeans with holes in. Ordinarily tatty items (not pyjamas obviously) get worn to the livery yard first. When I know they're even too bad to wear there, then they're ready for throwing out. I'm glad you weren't hurt when you fell, so easy to do.
No snow here now, all washed away by heavy rain all day.The roads are all awash, with water pouring off the fields.
Mcculloch, I love the word 'kipple', never heard it before. I threw out most of my unwanted and tatty undies before we moved here, but I know they're easy to accumulate, though.
Re the empty sink thing - would never work in our house, as OH can never leave the sink empty. He always does the washing up, but rarely puts anything away, unless things start falling over in the rack. Can't complain, though, as he usually does the washing-up!0
