Anyone else avoid sorting the shed/ garage/ basement for fear of blasted critters?
On the plus side, I have discovered minimalism websites and am going to try to apply a dose of the same to my cluttered life. Won't work, but it might help a teeny bit.
My life is afflicted with MBUs (might-be-usefuls). These come in all shapes and sizes and are beggars to store.....:rotfl:
That is the exact reason why I never go in the garage without my hubbyThe tiny ones, I'm ok with (as long as they're not on me!) but the big ones.... But my grandmother has always told me that when you clean a messy rooms, it makes spiders come out  It doesn't help motivate me!
I read some minimalism blogs that were posted on the Big de-clutter thread. I like the main principles of it, mainly because it is against over-consumerism. But I don't think I could ever be a minimalistBut there are some rules I will definitely apply once I'm on top of things

BB do you have a FE college with a hairdressing course near you? They often offer decent hairstyling for reasonable rates (it does mean taking twice as long as there are students working on you) it's not as scary as it sounds as the tutors are VERY vigilant about what the students are doing.
Am now running out of laundry!!! :j Family unable to produce any more dirty clothing/bedding and even the dog has given up and gone to sleep.
Huge pile of weeds in the garden ready for the bonfire so have accomplished something today.
Off now to cook dinner.0 -
Hi Espresso 21 welcome to the mess club.
Well Iv mopped all downstairs floors, dusted, tidied, cleaned the leather couches in both livingrooms, sorted out the parakeet, and hoovered. Now Im finished for the rest of the day. My little hoover has stopped working I think its overheated.
The minalism site sounds good although I doubt Il ever acheive it.
I use a book withclear plastic pages to put my latest bills in. Have a filing cabinet but Its not really used. I tend to find the files fall off in it.
Monday I will change our bed ,mop the floor and tidy. Will put all the clothes away too. My pledge,lol.0 -
Hi all, been doing all sorts today, feel like i've done loads but i've only crossed three things off my "to do" list! Need to keep going and keep repeating my new mantra "baby steps, baby steps, baby steps"0

I am doing OK, one step forward one back. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when the very full but not particularly heavy binbag I was bringing downstairs' handles ripped off, and I watched helplessly as it tumbled down in slow motion, spilling its contents of "bits" from the boys' toys all over the place  I am afraid several thousand swear words were used, and I am now in a huff on the sofa having a cup of teaIt's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

Sounds like you need to declutter your vocab there jackie!
Babysteps indeed bedshaped - that is the only way to tackle a lifetime of bad clutter bad cleaning habits.
I HATE SPIDERS!!! And the though of clearing a shed is more than I can bear - just as well I dont have one!!
Welcome Expresso - we are a bunch of messy bums but we are trying - honest guv!
I dont have a FE college near me unfortunately - never mind. I think I will get the hair cut done during my lunch hour one day at work - then I can leave it until closers to the interviews.0 -
At last I don't feel a failure as a housekeeper - so demoralising when ex colleagues talked about their spotless homes (and showed pics on Facebook to prove it). I picked up some box files for paperwork, and also some cheap plastic storage boxes which just take A4 size paper. I had shedloads accumulated from work so this will go in one of these and gradually be sorted out.
I must be the only messer who actually likes spiders(or my ecological fly catchers as I like to call them). Ed and Charlie live in my study (two big hairy guys with nice webs). I'm the one in the family who always deals with removing these guys from the bath/wall/cupboard. I put it down to the years I spent on biology field trips. Only thing that phases me are wasps.
Tomorrow I must mop the hallway - *&*)(& cat brought a bird in ealier, and although I've cleaned up what was left (not much) I don't want them to use this as a dumping ground. Leaving it till tomorrow as I know my back won't cope with mopping tonight after the gardening.
Bread got made (OH averted disaster when he heard the timer going off as I was watching TV). Tortillas to make tomorrow for lunches so busy day.
Sorry for the rambling on, as I touch type I tend to put down what I'm thinking/remembering/sort of planning and then realise I've written an essay (always had trouble sticking to a word limit).0 -
I like spiders too. We used to have one that lived in the cellar and would pop upstairs every so often. I have a confession though I killed it by accident by dropping a pile of books on the floor:o. Poor thing.
Going to bed soon. Son has brought his shirts down for me to wash so Iv now got to wait until the wash is finished. Could have strangled him..0 -
Hey Soupdragon you know why they had spotless homes because they dont live in them. How can anyone relax when someone is always plumping up the pilows and wiping every bit of dust. I would not be comfortable in a showhouse.0

:rotfl:How I relate to this.
We are now shedless. Old one needed replacing and DH has now demolished it. He is laying extra slabs for the base of a new one.
The contents are now in the garage awaiting a new home.
Need to order a new shed soon so that we can get back into the garage again.
I managed to clear the pile of ironing sitting on the dining chair on Sunday. Family came to dinner and they wouldn`t have been able to sit down with it there.
Finally managed to hang everything up this morning.
Now need to tackle the basket full in the spare room
I have taken on board the tips about shaking, hanging and folding neatly for new washing though.
Not much more to report though.
Got to go now but will be back later to read through the rest of the thread.
Have a good day everyone0
