My home is a mess

Hi Messies!
Sonastin - we only watch stuff on i-player/catch-up. I sometimes deliberately search for programmes that OH will like but that I don`t like JUST so that I can potter in the kitchen or do some other jobs while he`s watching something and not likely to offer to pause the programme and keep telling me to sit down!
Snookey - Hope your sunburn eases quickly, and I`m glad you found Wales sunny - we are usually known for our lovely rain-sodden hills dotted with wet sheep!
Messy Status Report:
I did Henry & mop the LR & kitchen floors yesterday, shook & turned the LR rugs, AND washed Daftie-dogs cotton rug & bed. I`m so glad I did, it felt cooler somehow when it was cleaner! And Daftie always enjoys a fresh bed too.
Minor Successes -
LR windowsill & mantelpiece still clutter-free.
Kitchen sink/draining board & worktops kept clear.
Slow-cooked lamb yesterday was nice, & lots leftover so no need to cook today.
Epic Fail -
Sofa is completely hidden by clutter! (DGD has just been collected by her mum, and brought 2 used bathtowels, plus other items for washing out of her bedroom and scattered them on sofa. Maybe because it was a bit cluttered already...?
Time to feed the WM, I think!0 -
Well I finally got round to doing the bathroom yesterday am. The grout at the back of the shower is showing all manner of nasty black cracks appearing now which is not good. We're away for the weekend so OH is talking about doing something to repair it on Friday morning after I've had my shower & before we leave so its go the whole weekend to cure while we're away. I suppose that means the shower will need a load of cleaning as soon as we're back but at least it means the grout will (hopefully) be fresh and bright so I don't have to face that battle every week!
Yesterday was a wee bit overcast and the drop in temperature was so much more pleasant. It was the same at home this morning but here at the office (only 25 miles away but further inland & over a big hill) its back to bright sunshine and baking temperatures. We have little islands of functioning air con in the building but most of it is broken beyond repair now. I keep wandering away from my red-hot desk to talk to friends and colleagues in cooler parts of the building!0 -
Sonastin - could you ask your OH what he`s going to use on that grouting? He sounds like he`d know the right thing to fix stuff, so I`d be very grateful if you`d pick his brains for me - I too have grotty grout on one side of the bath!
Speaking of Hot Buildings - I`m actually very glad not to be in hospital right now (working or as a patient!) as the ward I was on for my op is upstairs and gets very hot. My ward is ground floor, and that`s bad enough. There is air con but I don`t think it copes very well in extremes! Fans aren`t much help, as the free-standing ones or ceiling ones just blow the same hot air around, AND any airborne bugs, so they`re not approved by the Infection Control experts. Individual fans on patients` lockers are ok though (?) But we don`t have enough to go round in hot weather, so have to prioritise ours for folks who are running high temps or physically distressed by the heat. Sometimes visitors will bring a fan in for their folks, but like any electrical appliance we have to get them safety-checked first - even if they`re brand new & still in the box! Some people get quite cross about it, and we end up doing a lot of apologising for `the system`.
I`ve had to go into town today, and I wish I`d thought to use the multi-storey car park! Each time going back to the car it was like getting into a hot oven, but stuff in chiller-bag in the boot stayed cool. I`ve finally sorted the last of a crop of July birthdays though, and got the sofa clear again as well.
Still to do:-
Bring in & put away clean washing,
Scrape a few spuds & bung in oven with a chicken. (with steamed cauli & some mange-toots! & Cheat`s Gravy if OH wants some)
Escape from indoor heat & sit outside in shade....0 -
I asked OH about the grout. He's planning to rake the old grotty stuff out with an oscillator and then re-grout them just with the normal stuff you'd put in when you put new tiles up. The great thing about him having been self-employed in a handy job is that he's always got the right tools to do the job. Much easier to justify purchasing tools when you're charging clients to use them! If you're not so well endowed with power tools, apparently an oscillator is the type of thing that they use to cut off plastercasts - it cuts through some stuff (e.g. plaster, grout) but doesn't damage others (arms, walls!). He did buy a spare from Aldi a few months ago when his was making worrying noises so they are out there.
Me, I'm the kinda gal who uses a butter knife as a screwdriver.
Or better still (when I was single and could afford it) a chequebook. Most useful tool in my toolbox!0 -
Thanks Sonastin. Basically, what your OH is doing is taking out all the old grout first (as I feared might be necessary here). I don`t think I`d manage that even with the right tools, so I`m going to ask DS if he`ll have a go. He`s a great procrastinator though...I think I may have to resort to the chequebook after all to get the job done. OH is a dear but not at all `handy` and I`m one who likes to have a go if it`s something within my capability. On the subject of Screwdriver substitutes I have found teaspoons useful over the years!0

My home is a total mess!
We moved the rabbit pen into another room due to the heat so the furniture is all over the place, the buns are making themselves at home in the new room and the living room looks really depressing with no buns in it!0 -
Hi Messies!
Alec E, never mind the mess, you got your priorities right if the buns are more comfortable!
YorkshireLass - how did the interview go? I was thinking of you, remembered the date because it`s between some birthdays. Now I`ve just thought, maybe they haven`t let you know yet - if so, fingers still crossed, and ((HUGS)) anyway!
Still Very Hot. I was up early this morning and thought I`d do a bit of Tetris in caravan of Doom, but it got too hot before I got round to it. It IS good weather for doing short bursts of stuff, I`ve used the timer and pottered at bits of tidying, but with lots of tea-in-the-shade breaks:-
Bathroom and both loos cleaned.
Beds changed, bedding washed AND dried outside.
Lump of YS pork shoulder cooked for tonight, crackling looks promising too.
I`ve taken down & washed LR curtains. (That was the easy bit, I`m dreading putting them back up again! Might leave it for tomorrow, we`re not overlooked.)
Some folks are greatly looking forward to the end of the week, school hols, but my next-door`s isn`t, nor is my DD! DGD (DS`s daughter) isn`t going to be here at the weekend as usual, as she`s off to spend a week with her other grandparents (Stoke). I do miss her when she`s away more than a couple of days, but they are lovely folks and they don`t see as much of her as we do, so can`t grudge them her delightful company.0 -

Afternoon Messies. I hope you've not all melted away, as I know even Scotland has hot weather!
I see Emms is still at home, probably just as well with this heat. Not gone back and read all posts since I was last here, but I suspect the regulars are still de-messing, at one level or another. And I reckon Buffy and JPS can't wait until the end of term. Loadsa kids over here atm - presumably a lot of them at private schools.
I know I've been missing AGAIN for a good while, but life, as ever, got a bit busy. And I thought retirement meant sitting around doing not very much. :rotfl: Had my long weekend away in Surrey with the DDs, which was great, although the hotel had a longish email of complaint from DD1 - decidedly sloppy, considering the name and the amount we paid. Still, we got to see DD2 and bf's house - huge and lots of potential, considering what they paid for it, and Surrey prices, too. It's a total mess atm, because they've started work on it - handy DD2 having a bf who's 'in the trade'. Met up with bf's family, and all had a drink and meal together on Saturday. Sunday, we were jigging to Squeeze, James Morrison and Bryan Adams, while trying to find some shade, the latter not being at all easy. Still, we lived to tell the tale. Hopefully, I'll try harder, and get in here more often. Maybe.X

Hi Messies!
Isis, it`s lovely to hear from you again, though I`m so sorry to hear that your health is still troubling you. I remember you were struggling last year and having to finish uni. My best friend has CFS and fibro, had to give up work completely a couple of years ago. She does have some better periods when she feels ok, but a lot of the time she`s just not able to do anything and she`s had to learn to be a lot gentler on herself. She said in her last letter that she`s only just getting the hang of being patient.... If you can`t do things around the house, then you can`t. and it`s no good beating yourself up about it and feeling guilty. I bet your OH tells you this as well, right?
Bearcub, you was missed! I`m glad your long weekend went well, and good on you gal if you can jig in this heat!!! At least you weren`t up to your knees in mud though.
Chez-Emm - I still haven`t put the LR curtains back up. Maybe later, when it cools down! Managing to keep windowsill, mantelpiece and sofa clear of clutter, and sink & worktops clear. And that will just have to do.
Have a nice evening all.0
