A handset doesn't need to be unlocked for using abroad. For a sim card to work abroad it has to have roaming activated.

Not that this can help you.

As roaming is very expensive, I'd expect him to keep the phone switched off to avoid paying for the incoming calls.

having it activated for roaming was what i meant grumbler sorry :o
Just wondered, (unless I'm missing it and its already been suggested/tried) know it will cost something but have you tried phoning your OH? You could try on the landline which may save a bit but if you did try with the mobile at least you'd know the mobile worked?
And yes jenniewb I have tried ringing his phone but as said it goes straight to voicemail. think I'm just gonna have to stay frustrated and hope he realises when he gets home and has all the txt messages come through that I had been trying very hard to get hold of him :( thanks anyway guys x

Check out what network he's connected to and see if there's an alternative network available to connect to and try that. One of the main Greek networks has blocked incoming text messages from certain (if not all) UK networks so while the network will still have a voice agreement with the network they wont have a text message agreement so the foreign network will discard any text messages it receives from certain UK networks.

I can't remember the name of the Greek network that's blocking the text messages, but I do remember it's one of the biggest. Find out what network he's on over there then contact your network provider and find out if they have text message agreement with the network.
