Getting confused with all the different phones, please help

Hiya

I've been after a new PAYG around the £100 mark for a while now, but every time I think I've found the right one I read reviews and theres always something wrong with it, I get confused and move on to look for another one but now my phone has given up the ghost and I desperately need to sort out a new one so if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be ever so grateful.

What I need / would like

Around £100
PAYG
I'm on O2 at the mo and I'm happy with them
If I can keep my number thats great but it's not a must
Would like a smart phone but doesn't have to be 'trendy'
Don't know if it's possible but can you play Facebook games on these phones?
Would like quite a good camera, if it has a flash thats a bonus but not a must
My old phone would only hold about 5 pictures which I had to move to the SDCard manually before I could take more pics which is a big bug bear, I want to be able to snap away with out a care lol
WIFI & bluetooth would be great

I use my mobile mainly to text, use it very little for calls so £10 top up a month usually does for me but I know I'll use more on my new one (at least till the novelty wears off on apps and stuff), so should I be looking at a pay monthly? (Told you I was confused lol)

Really like this but heard it's slow in receiving texts and then you get multiples of same text, is this still the case? http://shop.o2.co.uk/mobile_phone/pay_and_go/specifications/Samsung/Galaxy%20Europa

Like this but only has 4 hours talk time http://shop.o2.co.uk/mobile_phone/pay_monthly/specifications/Sony%20Ericsson/Xperia%20X10%20Mini%20Pro

Saw this while searching threads here for help and looks fab for price but only 4 hours talk time again http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/pay-as-you-go/t-mobile-pulse-mini-pink/

Am I being too picky with talk time? I know I won't be using it to talk but I will be using it for apps etc.

Phew I think thats everything, if you can make head or tail of all that and can give me any advise that would be lovely

Many thanks in advance for reading and any info you can offer xx

All phones have some issue or another. Find one that has the features you want at a price you like and just go buy the damned thing.

And if you're running apps a lot and battery life is a concern, there's only one answer - iPhone.

  • You cited talktime as an issue with some of the phones but if as you said that you hardly use the phone to make calls then that should not be an issue - I think the Pulse on T-Mobile is a great deal, It was originally £49.99 and has gradually been reduced and today went down to £19.99 - Also with the Pulse you get 6 months free internet and 100 minutes with a monthly top up of at least £10.
    :dance:Quidco Payments In 2011 - £724.21

    June: £43.15/July: £51.22/August: £90.60/September: £29.75/October: £284.07/November: £171.08/December: £29.22

    Thanks for the replies

I was assuming talk time meant battery life, gosh I know even less about these things than I thought I did lol

I really want the phone for texting, a little bit of facebooking, maybe a game or 2 (but I'm not a big phone game player), a bit of google searching (my eyes arn't brilliant so nothing with really really tiny text) and I love taking pictures but don't want to carry round a bulky camera all the time. I've not used a smart phone before so I don't really know what they are capable of doing but everyone seems 'app' crazy so I guess I need something that is good with those. I'm not someone who has to have the trendy new item but I'd like something nice that will last a year or 2.

I've had a look at the OSF & The pulse and they both look good, I think I'm leaning a little towards the OSF at the moment...

Many thanks again for your replies and have a great weekend xx

I love my OSF but it takes lousy pictures and no flash. I am considering to switch for this reason.

Start with the t-mobile pulse for £20. If that really doesn't do the trick for you, then you've not lost too much.

I would get the x10 mini pro, it is android and it has a very good camera compared to all other phones in it's price range (including most phones upto £300-400). (some sample shots) even has a dedicated shutter button.

android phones have access to the android market, and that is where you will find all the games, you won't be able to use any phone in the £100 range to play facebook games BUT every game you could possibly want should be in the android market (angry birds is free and can play on the x10 mini pro) plus there are loads of others.

and even though you cannot play facebook games you can use the facebook site/app to post updates/send messages/view photos ect.

as I said the camera is really good and has a flash, photos are stored to your memory card (upto 32GB you can buy) so you should never run out of space, you can also use the memory card to put music on the phone so it can replace your mp3 player.

and because it is android it can back up all your contacts and calendar to gmail so if your phone is ever lost/stolen you don't loose all your contacts/calendar.

it also has wifi and bluetooth, and gps so will geotag your photos you take and can also be a full satnav system if you want. (you may need a data add-on)

what I would say is if you can but it from the carphone warehouse (t-mobile £130) and ask them if it is an unlocked phone before you buy, if it is get it from them, the reason it is good if it is unlocked is because you can put any sim in you want, and because you can update it to android 2.1 which is better than the 1.6 it comes with.

only problem is that it is a very small phone therefore it has a smallish screen for text massages it isn't much of a problem though as the phone has a physical keyboard so the keyboard isn't shown on the screen.

Today I have bought the Orange San Francisco and love it so far. I went for the white one an used my Tesco club card vouchers which I doubled up and I am hoping to put my Tesco Mobile sim into it.

DH has unlocked mine and it seems to be working OK for texts/calls etc. He hasn't got around to removing the Orange Apps yet as he wants to see how it runs over the next few days but I am loving it.
