I have often managed to get business use added to my insurance for free - you just need to limit your business mileage - in my case that means 1000 miles.

The boss should run his own errands if he doesn't want to pay 40p per mile!

Anyway, it is 45p now, since the Budget.

One word of warning though - your car must have Class 1 Business use included on your car insurance, otherwise you are not insured when you are running these errands.

It won't have if you have normal (SD&P + Commuting) insurance.

Cost will be arrpox 30% extra on top of your current insurance premium.

    Quite a sweeping statement.
It may have been the case for your insurer and your circumtances but the difference in adding business use can vary wildly.
My quote this year without it was £467. Since I considered that quote to be quite reasonable, I asked how much with Business use added.
    "£477".
    Cost me an extra tenner.

How would you explain it to them if you had an accident in the work car park? (if you have one).

Lots of explanations.. you were dropping a friend off, you took a wrong turning and ended up in the car park, you stopped in there to make a phone call, you even saw an injured animal and went to help but it ran off etc

There would be no way they could prove you were driving to work at that precise time of the accident. If they found out you were due in work, you can say you decided to skive off and had no plans of going in, but instead you decided to visit a building some metres down the road.

No point paying these insurance companies any more than you absolutely have to.

Charge him whatever you want... or s/he can offer what ever they want or you meet somewhere in the middle. Most companies have a travel/expenses policy.

As for the 45p per mile. That is for tax purposes. You only pay tax on the amount reimbursed which is more than 45p per mile. So if you agreed 50p a mile, you would pay tax on the additional 5p for every mile. If it was £5 per mile (you wish) then you would pay tax on the additional £4.55 for every mile.

Similarly, if you were paid <=45p/mile then you would not have to pay tax.

Exactly. I wouldn't do it for 45p but might for £xx a trip etc. Get cash and sod the tax.

Mine was still free when I declared 20,000 business miles a year. it all depends on your insurer at the end of the day.

Look at their posting history it appears they are just a troll who delights in confrontational posts just to provoke a response, they have had several posts removed for abuse in various threads including this one.

How anyone can encourage and advise people to break the law, cheat on insurance companies and brag how they do it on an open forum is just idiotic and downright stupid.

Has anyone got a link to the fact it's gone up to 45p please? I can't seem to find anything that says it.
