Why is it at petrol filling stations some drivers dont pick a pump thats in use and park up behind the car thats using the pump, instead they stop and wait to pick a pump thats next to be free which in turn causes cars to build up blocking the exit form the supermarket. It is rocket science so why do some drivers make it so.

I think the problem is some people don't realise the hose can reach over your car, so if there's only a space free with the hose on what would be the passenger side of the car, and their filling hole/thingy is on the driver side, they won't go to that space.
If that makes sense!
I am only assuming that's the reason but I can't think of why else you would not go into a free spacecarpe diem

Having struggled once to get the hose over my car to the other side, I would rather wait than have the hassle of trying to do that again!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Our Asda only has diesel on the front pumps, and the hose doesn't reach to the far side of my car, so I have to block a unused pump if I'm waiting. It's quite annoying that people buying petrol will go to the front ones, though (when there is tons of room to drive round, if they were to use the rear ones). I guess if they buy petrol, they might not have noticed that only the front pumps have diesel.0

Surely that problem lies with Asda and not the customers. How does the customer in front of you know that you want diesel??British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

I don't like the idea of having the grimy, sand/gravel coated, wet hose draped over the bodywork of my car tbh......0 -

Sounds just like Tesco at Carlisle!
Possibly the worst layout of a supermarket car park and petrol station that they could have built.
You can't turn right out of the petrol station to get to the car park, so everyone goes the supermarket first and then the petrol station and not the other way round.
You can't get past the petrol station queue to get out of the car park when it is busy, because the petrol queue backs up onto the road out of the car park.
All made even worse by the dikheads who 'cover' two rows of pumps by stopping in the middle of the access so that nobody else can get to the pumps before them if one queue happens to move quicker!
THEN there are the people paying with Visa/Mastercard who insist on paying in the shop when they don't want anything else, thus slowing the place down even more.
I just wish that company Fuel Cards worked on Pay-At-Pump. Unfortunately we have to go into the shop, like it or not!!British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

I've not seen flying gravel. you must have a very dirty petrol station. With no roof.
If you park your car right, the hose won't even touch it.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
When Fred turns up to fill, and we get hose on tother side, Freda gets out and does it. Heels, nets and skirt does not 'alf get some looks from the waiting numps0

I have yet to visit any PFS where the hose will not reach to the far side of a car...
maybe park a bit closer next time...:rotfl:0 -
I went to a Sainsbury Petrol Station this morning. It has three pumps per lane.
In the lane next to me, the middle car went, then the front car went, but the lady first in the queue didn't pull round them and as she was queueing at an awkward angle, nobody else could get past her. She waited until the remaining person came back and moved. She had the choice of three empty pumps, but she only pulled forward to the first available one, then immediately flung her door open and spent absolutely ages faffing about and heaving herself out of the car which stopped the people waiting behind her getting past to the middle and front pumps.
And I though old ladies were supposed to be polite and well mannered! Here I go again on my own....0
