Can I make coconut cream into a coconut milk equivalent?

You're supposed to grate the block into a jug then add boiling water to make cream or milk. Personally, I just grate it with the knife and chuck it into the pot.
The thick coconut cream tins just have less water in them than the big tins of coconut milk - if you have a tin of c.milk sitting for a while, you will see it separates into coconut cream and water.
It's a heck of a lot cheaper to use the blocks as well.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
I moticed the price of coconut milk shooting ip but today in tesco it was 80p and 3 for 2 so I bought all they had. In am mergency I use the solid cream and grate into hot water.
I was in Tesco this morning and the shelf in the ethnic food section with the Chakaoh coconut milk (think that's what it's called, or thereabouts) had been cleared and I do my main shop on Ocado and they stopped selling their cheaper brand, too, which was around 80p.
You're not in Cambridge, are you? If so, you must have got there before me!0 -
Basically, yes. You shake the can if you want c.milk, you let it stay separated if you want cream.
Which is why I cut out the cost of water and the weight of the can and use the blocks insteadI could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -

Not guilty in cambridge! It was that brand and I prefer it as it has no emulsifiers like the more mainstream brands like blue dragon etcPeople seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

When I was in Asda recently, the store assistant informed me that they do not sell the creamed coconut block anymore.0

Have you tried any of the cheapo shops like Aldi/Netto/Lidl? I often pop into Aldi for some veg, and they have quite a good range of 'world food' type ingredients. I'm sure I saw tinned coconut milk in there for less than £1 a few weeks ago.
I also have some of the sachets in the cupboard, but have not been impressed with the results so far!Shrinking my mortgage!

Cos it's so much cheaper.
Try your local independent grocery - the types with unrecognisable fruit and veg out the front in immaculate displays.
Incidentally, such places will often sell powdered unsweetened coconut powder, which does the same job again (but is even easier)I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -

the instructions tell you to mix it with hot water first, but I just add it & water to the pan of food until it has the correct consistency
only problem is it's difficult not to eat it straight from the pack0 -
Swan and Jojo the Tightfisted - Thanks for your ideas although I only went to Asda to see if they had been discontinued and therefore reduced(!). I get mine elsewhere anyway at a Cash and Carry - only 3 for a £1. Also get them reduced if over the date anywhere.0
