We eat a lot of Thai curries but will have to stop as the only coconut milk I can find is now £1.80 per tin. Previously I was able to buy it for around 70p.
I have some old coconut cream that MIL bought and left and so was wondering if it can be made to a consistency that is similar to coconut milk and will produce the same flavour.
Sorry if it is obvious
Thanks

I don't have the answer but will be watching to see if anyone knows it would be so much cheaper and easier to make recipes requiring coconut milk.
I found tins in Asda Radja (sp?) brand, in the ethnic food section but it was more like a thick cream than a milk I have a tin to use up so hopefully I'll be able to water it down or something to make it useable!Credit Card: £796 Left/£900 October 2011 :eek:Store Card: £100 October 2011

The Asda Raja coconut milk is thick out of the tin but goes runnier when heated up so should be fine for making a curry. i've been using it for making cocunut rice pudding.0

I buy blocks of coconut cream, can't remember the exact price, but you use about 1/4 block chopped up, and then hot water to make it milk like-much cheaper than tins. I also used tinned coconut cream, and buy the carribean coconut milk from the ethnic aisle in tescos-its about 60p.
I have to admit to recently stocking up on the low fat amoy one in tesco@ 1.20 per tin though...
ETA-just add enough warm water to thin the coconut cream to your desired consistency0 -
if it's liquid coconut cream just dilute it a bit with water, if it's the block kind, blend it with warm/hot water till it's the consisitency you need, it won't be exactly the same, but will get the coconut cream used up
I find the most economic form of coconut milk for cooking is coconut milk powder, you'll get it in packets in ethnic grocers or supermarkets, you'll also see coconut powder, but don't get that it's not the same
EDIT ... cross-posted with hotcookie, darn my slow typing0 -
The coconut cream I have has instructions on the packet of how much water to add but I tend to just chuck it in until it looks how I want it to.0

I use the coconut cream blocks. I just throw it in the pot with the curry paste/meat, then add stock/water until it's the consistency I want.Total Debt Sept 2010 - £24,132.38 / Current - £0.00/ 100% paid

I use the blocks too - you can get a box of 4 sachets which are about 1/4 block's worth IYSWIM. 62p - bargain!"No matter how little money and how few possesions you own, having a dog makes you rich." - Louis Sabin0

^ I love these Georgina, the only shop that seems to sell them is Asda though.
Put the sachet in hot water for a couple of minutes, squeeze out the contents and then add as much water as required to reach the desired consistency.Barclaycard 0% - [STRIKE]£1688.37 [/STRIKE] Paid off 10.06.120 -

I moticed the price of coconut milk shooting ip but today in tesco it was 80p and 3 for 2 so I bought all they had. In am mergency I use the solid cream and grate into hot water.People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.
