Tax credits stop when?

Hi,

Have been given conflicting advice by tax credits (no suprise there then!!!) I'd like to know when my tax credit will be adjusted to show DD is no longer in FT education.
One CS person said when CB stops but another said when she leaves school, which is correct? It's going to be a loss of appox £200 every 4 wks, so firstly I don't want to be overpaid, nor do I want to lose it too soon!!! They really mucked it up when she was staying on even tho I told them in plenty of time and I'd like to avoid that situation again.

I have looked on HMRC site but can't seem to find the answer

  • If your daughter is going on to further education it should be paid until 31st August. If she is not continuing in education you should tell tax credits on the last day of the current course or on the day of the last exam, whichever is later.

Thanks she's going to Uni (hopefully) so last exam day then.
    Many thanks
  • If she's going to Uni you can claim until 31st August. That's what I meant when I said further education, maybe I should have said higher education/university.

It will stop in August if they are 16 but if they are 17 or over there are different stop dates depending on when they leave school, or so I've been informed.

She's already 18!!! and in what I'd call upper sixth but is now called yr13?

    Thanks again subsoniccoyote
  • I recently asked this for a couple of friends of mine.
Apparantly Child Benefit carries on until a set date after they leave education. The likelyhood is that it will be the end of August.
If your child is off to Uni then the Tax credit office needs to know on the last day of the course that they have finished College.
Tax credits will stop on that day.
Apparantly there are different rules for Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit

    I agree with richpoortyke.

When my daughter left full time education (college) in June 2010, at the age of 18, I advised tax credits and child benefit accordingly.

The tax credits in respect of my daughter stopped immediately. The child benefit continued until the beginning of September.

I am not aware if the fact that your child is going on to uni will make any difference to these rules - maybe someone else on the forum could help with that part of your query.

Hope this is of some help to you.
  • As far as i am aware the tax credits will stop when the course stops. The 'child' will be treated as an adult, so ineffect they are expected to be going to work or in this case Uni which isnt covered by Tax Credits. They only cover up to A Level standard courses up to the age of 20

thanks everyone.. still got differing answers, I'll just make sure I let both know when she actually leaves and see what happens. Whenever it happens it's going to be a blow finance wise
  • I work for TCO. The tax credit manual that shows this part is as follows:
    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/ntcmanual/changes_child/ntc0155040.htm
Note: FTNAE means full time non-advanced education.

Note: If a qualifying young person is under 20 years and has left FTNAE or approved training with the intention of continuing into advanced education enter an end date of 31/08/XX

Note: If the young person does not intend to continue into advanced education enter the actual end date of FTNAE or approved training. However if the claimant has notified you that the young person’s earlier intention has changed and that they no longer intend to continue in advanced education enter the date their intention changed

As the young person is going to university the CTC WILL continue until 31st August. The young person is NOT expected to find employment in the few weeks between leaving school/college and moving to university.

Please ignore the incorrect advice you are getting from other posters.

It doesn't matter if your daughter is 16, 17, 18 or 19. The tax credit rules apply the same. CTC would run up until the day before her 20th birthday if she is in non-advanced education. University is advanced education so due to the changeover CTC will run until 31st of August before she starts the new course.

When you call the tax credit helpline, don't ust tell them your daughter has left school, tell them she is going on to university and tell them you have been made aware that the CTC should run until 31st August. You will likely be told to phone back as they won't update the change in advance of 31st August.
