I work for TCO. The tax credit manual that shows this part is as follows:
    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/ntcmanual/changes_child/ntc0155040.htm
Note: FTNAE means full time non-advanced education.

Note: If a qualifying young person is under 20 years and has left FTNAE or approved training with the intention of continuing into advanced education enter an end date of 31/08/XX

Note: If the young person does not intend to continue into advanced education enter the actual end date of FTNAE or approved training. However if the claimant has notified you that the young person’s earlier intention has changed and that they no longer intend to continue in advanced education enter the date their intention changed

As the young person is going to university the CTC WILL continue until 31st August. The young person is NOT expected to find employment in the few weeks between leaving school/college and moving to university.

Please ignore the incorrect advice you are getting from other posters.

It doesn't matter if your daughter is 16, 17, 18 or 19. The tax credit rules apply the same. CTC would run up until the day before her 20th birthday if she is in non-advanced education. University is advanced education so due to the changeover CTC will run until 31st of August before she starts the new course.

When you call the tax credit helpline, don't ust tell them your daughter has left school, tell them she is going on to university and tell them you have been made aware that the CTC should run until 31st August. You will likely be told to phone back as they won't update the change in advance of 31st August.

    Thank you.

I did know about not updating in advance as I had that hassle the yr she stayed on. They sorted my TC in April/May on the assumption she was leaving. I called as soon as I got the reward notice saying she was staying on. And had to call back on 1 Sept to tell them as the system won't accept advance notice.

    Thanks again

Thats interesting because i have a couple of friends who have recently asked this question. They were informed that they would have their money stopped when the course finished.
They were informed that the rules were different to child benefit which carried on until the 31/08.
So what you are saying is that whether they continue in F/T education or even go into Higher education they will receive Child Tax Credit up to the end of August?

I also asked the question in two seperate phone calls to the TC office, and got two different answers!!! Hence the reason for asking on here.

Hi Subsoniccoyte, does this apply if DD did A level resits in January and hasn't been back to college since. She has been accepted to University to start in September. She is working full time up until she goes to uni so will CTC and WTC still be payable until August 31st.

Don't worry, just read your link and it does appear to be that full CTC and WTC will be paid for the full 7-8 months that child is no longer in education and working full time. Bargain, £70 a week for a child earning a full time wage!

Has your daughter been in full time education until January or did she just sit exams she failed in the summer?

If she's been in full time education this would be fine but if she only sat a couple of exams after officially ending the A-levels course in the summer, the CTC should have stopped in the summer.

I don't deal with child benefit but I'm sure there's a limit on the number of hours she can work before you would need to end your claim.

She went back to college September and resat a few modules in January to up her A level results because she didn't get the results she needed to go to uni. Tax credits were informed she went back to college and reinstated the credits. If they've just assumed full time how would they ever find out any different?
  • You need to prove full time education to child benefit.
If your daughter's child benefit has stopped it wont take long for your child tax credits to end as they cross reference.
