How do you get free holiday? I want some too!0

Ooh don't let that bother you; I've taken my kids out for two weeks holiday every school yr since they started. My OH doesn't earn teachers wages and we/they deserve holidays too.
They're 13 and 9 now, both top of their class and DD 13 is at grammar school (98% pass at 11 plus with NO tuiton) and in national gifted and talented youth. It has done them no harm at all, and last year they were also off sick *coughs* for 4 days after I won a 4 night break at haven, went on the monday night, they finished school on the thursday anyway so used 3 nights there. Then won a weekend at pontins so took them on the friday night and had the mon off sick. Stuff it. Oh and we won the darts at pontins and went for the final in Nov, (2 nights) so I took them both out half day Friday for that too, They're not kids long and you don't look gift horses in the mouth. That's my motto! Just make up for it when they are at school! Some kids have a day off here and a day off there which is more detrimental than taking 3 weeks of the year off.
This school yr they've already had a week off in sept and another one due soon to go ski-ing, and if any free haven hols come along later they'll be off sick again!;)
I don't especially like to comment in a negative way but I am absolutely shocked by your attitude. Its's great that your kids are so talented, but for those that aren't missing school is a disaster. I'm a teaching assistant, £7.50 per hour, how about I go 'sick' as I have to struggle to afford holidays and I certainly can't afford skiing. What about exam years? I do not want to put anyone down or be rude in any way but please don't encourage others as the ones whoses kids are behind could be affecting their future.Too many children, too little time!!!0 -
You miss my point.
I am not suggesting parents keep kids off all year. I am saying that a few weeks off in a yr is not going to do any great harm, and you should not look a gift horse in the mouth. My children both got over 90% attendance last year even with all their holidays. I don't think that is unacceptable
Not meaning to be rude, but I feel your anger is more because you are saying "Should I go sick, I am classroom asst" Well, if that's what you want yes, although my husband uses his holidays. You may have to take your holidays in school hol time, but you chose that career and are aware of the fact that you cannot take holidays in term time, although getting how ever many weeks in a year probably makes up for it a bit eh? lol!
For the record. My husband earns less than you and I gave up work to bring my children up. (And thats worth more than an extra 2 months in school having an on hand parent to help at school, go on child/parent courses and simply having time to read, write, discuss things with them and whatever, which is why my kids have done so well) and yet we can afford to go skiing!
We go without many things and budget wisely. We also book early get free child places and internet offers, not forgetting the old quidco cashback. For a week half board, all our skiing equipment, lift passes and lessons, flights and transfers, we've paid £1100. Some people spent that in fags in 6 months, or on buying lunches at work.
Schools allow 2 weeks off a year anyway. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, and besides we've taken our kids to Paris, Amsterdam, Prague etc and they have wealth of experience of different cultures, currencies and languages, visited museums, climbed the eiffel tower, visited the louvre. This year we visit Poland and will visit Auschwitz which will be very educational.
Education isnt just about sitting behind desks. It starts in the early yrs at home, continues at school with major back up from home and broadens with out of school experiences.
Holidays in term time are often a quarter of what they are in the holidays and sorry, but we all deserve a holiday. I'm sure most people on here are not able to afford mega expensive holidays in hol time or they wouldnt be on here.
A few weeks off a yr does no harm as long as you put plenty into your childs education and well being.
WE all have different opinions, yes, and I respect that, but sometimes you have to grab things when offered to you. I would hate to look back when my children are 20 and think, wish Id thought, stuff it and made the most of their childhood. Most struggling kids need more home input than worrying about a holiday. I know as I help those sort of kids at school, I don't get paid for it though.:DI can be brown I can be blue I can be violet and sky. I can be hurtful I can be purple I can be anything you like..Gotta be green gotta be mean gotta be everything more...0 -
And I respect your opinion, though I also gave up my career to have kids, being a TA meant I could be there for my children and count I that as a blessing. By the way we are only paid an hourly rate unfortunately so although great having time off you don't get paid for it.:rolleyes:Too many children, too little time!!!0

Yes I know that. I was just saying even on a low wage you can do things. WE also get working tax credits of course and child tax credits. We never got these when my eldest was a baby. Just a very small family credit payment
I am hoping to return to work, and after taking A levels at college, hopefully as a lab technician in a school when my youngest starts high school, then i can still have all the school holidays with them. Will have to rethink holidays then of course, so am making the most of it now!I can be brown I can be blue I can be violet and sky. I can be hurtful I can be purple I can be anything you like..Gotta be green gotta be mean gotta be everything more...0 -
when I was out tonight, my wife took a phone call from Pontins saying that £60 self-catering holidays were still available for Southport - not sure if for anywhere else. We are trying for half-board at Blackpool but there doesn't
seem to be any deals for this.0 -

speaking from experience my family took me and my sis out of school once a year for 2 weeks....never was a problem then and we certainly havnt suffered thu it...sis was working for shipping company till starting family and im now a train driver....so 2 weeks a year will hardly stop your budding brain surgeon....will just give them a little bit of "life" experience too0 -
