The 10.* addresses were the default for the router. Yes this is a work network. Our network was set up with 192.168.0.* addresses.

Following espresso's advice, I've now changed the DNS to the Zen ones. Some progress I think! I can now connect to the net from the laptop (running XP home) with cable now connecting directly from laptop to hub and router connected to one of the MDI-X ports on the hub using its original cable. So I think the cabling is all fine now. I think.

However, the other PCs can't access the net. They can ping each other, and one of them can ping the router. The other can't ping the router (I'm just trying restarting that one) and neither can access the net or ping any external addresses.

I've checked the ip addresses and the default gateway address and the DNS addresses and all are correct (when compared with the laptop).

I've now restarted the PC that couldn't ping the router and that seems sorted. I've also tried moving laptop and connecting to network via the cable out of one of the PCs. That works fine. So can't be a cabling problem. Is there something different I need to do in Win 2000 Pro? All PCs bar laptop are running win2k. Only this laptop running xp-home is connecting to net.
  • Is the router still 10.* and the PC's still 192.*? (you need to stick to one standard for the local network)

Are the pc's using a static ip address, or dhcp from the router?

how many PC's are there in total?

You should be able to attach a standard ethernet cable from the router to the uplink port on the hub. If you are using another hub port, it will need to be attached with a crossover cable.

Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

When connecting the modem/router to the hub should I be using one of the Twisted-Pair ports (MDI-X) or the Uplink port (MDI-II). The cable originally used to connect router to hub is labelled copartner CM 24awg/4prs Category 5 Patch Cord. The cable used to connect pcs to the hub (and which works for connecting laptop directly to router) is labelled cat5e-100 stranded type CM. Cat 5 Cable Master. Doesn't seem to give a LAN light on router if I use that one.
A 'patch' cable is normally a straight-through cable, as opposed to a crossover cable. To check which type yours is, compare the plugs side by side: if the coloured wires are in the same order then it's a straight-through cable, otherwise it's a crossover cable.

A straight-through cable is required for connecting the uplink port of the router to the hub, or computer NIC to hub.

A crossover cable is required for connecting the twisted pair ports of the router to the hub, however with an MDI port both types of cable should work.

Router and PCs all on 192.* addresses. PCs using static IP addresses. There are 5 pcs in all 4 running win2kpro and 1laptop running winxp home. I think i've ruled out cabling problems since laptop works fine from any of the cables. I've just been trying to get things working from two of the win2k pcs for the moment. Others are switched off. I'm going to have to tackle this in the morning now. Got to get home to look after the kids. But keep the ideas coming in! You guys are great!

    Any other ideas folks?
  • Post ipconfig/all from the laptop and one of the PCs.

Sorted it out. The router didn't seem to be able to pick up the fixed IP addresses from the PCs. Changing to obtain IP and DNS addresses automatically sorted the problem out.

Many thanks every for your help.
