Hi, I've got Avast. I went thru those steps anyway, and the UAC message came up first time. I clicked yes, to allow the changes. Should I then do something else? (sorry, my knowledge is very poor!!)
I tried to print straight away but it wouldnt. It tells me the printer is ready, and it's the correct printer, but then says no printer is installed.*** Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly ***

It is possible that your printer has accidentally been disabled as the default printer.
If you open the Printer option in Control Panel, you will see that there is another printer, probably called Microsoft XPS Printer, and your own and, if you have had other printers attached to the computer, those as well.
You need to ensure that the green tick is on the printer you want to use. If it isn't, right click on your printer icon and choose "Set as default printer".
This is a shot in the dark - as it doesn't explain why the printer works occasionally.0 -
Thanks David, it's ticked as the default printer. The problem only occurs for word and excel starter, and then intermittently. The printer does work for printing off anything else. Very strange!*** Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly ***

Have you got a PDF Creator?

PDF Reader

My PDF Creator is set as the default printer, maybe you could create a PDF from the Word file then try printing from the PDF Reader
If it is changed from PDF Creator to any other printer in Word, it then takes a bit to load the printer, if you try that, does it load the printer or say none installed?
This is to change back from a PDF to a Word Document

hi, not really much help, but I have the same problem. tried uninstalling and reinstalling office, but made no difference. all I can tell you is a workaround of sorts that worked for me, if you have another printer installed e.g. CutePDF you can switch to that printer, print what you want, switch BACK to the first printer and then print fine. its a pain but in a pinch it will let you print stuff off (if it works for you also). Found lots of people with the same problem but no definite solution...0

Not sure if it would help Office specifically, and you're able to print from other programmes, but it can't do any harm - download the latest drivers for your printer, delete the printer in control panel, then install the new drivers. Might help. Windows up to date as well?0

A few times it's let me print if I shut the program down and then restart it.*** Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly ***
