I couldn't check last night as not using my laptop which has all the links I usually use.....but have now added the link to the TARIC duty charge for a pram, pushchair or similar.

The import duty will therefore be 2.7% of whatever the value of the goods are (including postage) and then whatever that adds upto, you then add 20% VAT on top.

So if it was a £500 gift including postage then we're looking at £500 x 2.7% x 20% = £116.20 tax to pay (plus ther may be a handling charge by Royal Mail/whoever is the courier of between £12-£25 so basically it'll cost you about £120-£130 to receive this gift.
Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.

Its $530.00, so only £337 (I think) in GBP.

It will be valued at the £337.00 won't it?

If the sender states the correct value of $530 on the customs declaration, then yes UK customs will apply the duty and vat to the GBP £ value (worked out using the exchange rate at the time).

If the sender ships it via USPS, it will get handed over to ParcelFarce at this end so should be an £8 handling fee.

    depends on the postal method
    its £16 for express services
  • I work at a customs bonded warehouse, we tend to get alot of personal effects every month, and the best way to get around paying tax *Alot do it not good i know* take original packaging off the item, put back in box make the box look used and then have it sent as used goods. (over 6 months)

This way you will not have to pay any import tax on the Pram, i have seen people bringing in Brand new tv's and getting off with it and some getting caught as they leave the internall packing on the item when importing.

    hope this helps

To recap then you are suggesting that second hand goods attract no taxes or charges as long as they are over 6 months old?

Oh the joy of that being true. I sell antiques and collectables and since techncially an antique anything must be over 100 years old then my stuff cannot be considered new by any means. So maybe we should all be importing great works of art as of course even if they are worth thousands, they are still second hand....
