COX2 inhibitors were pulled from normal use a few years ago due to long term health concerns. Unfortunate for me as VIOXX was the only one that worked and gave any relief .

cagneyfan - Do you have the skin condition psoriasis?

I'm currently being looked at by a rheumatologist for psoriatic arthritis. About 10% of people with psoriasis develop it.

I've been seeing a physiotherapist about my gimpy foot for a year and had never mentioned to him that I even have psoriasis. I didn't see that a minor skin complaint could have any relationship to a dodgy joint.

Went to my GP a couple of months ago as a finger became very swollen and painful and he made the connection.

Anyway, psoriatic arthritis is another type that there's no blood test for. They did a blood test for RA to rule that out with me.

Definitely push for a rheumatologist referral. The joint problems and fatigue are absolutely classic symptoms of arthritis. If diagnosed as arthritis, you're likely to start on disease modifying drugs which can slow the progression. Arthritis left untreated can be far worse in future years than if it's attacked early.

I'm beginning to feel like they think I'm a fraud too as I've had blood tests, x-ray and ultrasound and everything looks normal. But I know that every other day I'm literally limping with the pain in my foot and I can't bend my finger that's affected!

Have a look at the Arthritis Care website. There are forums on there and they include people fighting to get a diagnosis. Even if what I have turns out not to be arthritis, I've read loads of useful tips on there about pain management, and gadgets/tricks to make everyday tasks easier.

Anyway, you still might find it hard to justify paying many times the price for nuromol as you would for the same ingredients separately in generic form. I think I'd still be inclined to get some supermarket own brand ibuprofen and paracetamol for pennies. Personally the idea of massively overpaying for a drug and being affected by drug company marketing would probably be more painful to me than the pain itself.

Aye. I'm currently taking the full dose of 6 ibuprofen a day.

Nuramol is £4.07 for 10 tablets in my local Boots. I'd be buying a box every other day!

I did say they were pulled for NORMAL USE !

They are still prescribed in special cases.

The COX-2 inhibitors that are currently licensed in this country are Cyclocelecoxib and Etoricoxib. So if you have had 3 different ones 1 must have been unlicensed

I always buy own brand painkillers from the chemist. They're always a fraction of the cost of big named brands, and do exactly the same thing.

Seems a bit of a rip-off really. I've been taking Paracetamol and Ibruprofen together for years when the pain was bad enough that one or the other wouldn't work. I mostly just use Co-Dydramol now though.

    Hi there,

You say to push for a rhuematologist appointment. I've previously posted that I had a Rheumatologist appointment and was very disappointed with it. I've mentioned it a few times to a Physio I saw and my gp. I was in and out faster than a burglar's dog (read previous post about it). He never listened to me, could hardly get a sentence out, I took a list of ailments which he never referred to and when I was examined if you blinked you'd miss it!

I was given blood tests (nothing has shown up) and had a couple of x-ray (but not on my hips which stop me sleeping).

My concern is that because nothing has shown up in the blood tests/x-rays - what then could the awful joint pain be?

I genuinely thought I'd have arthritis, and tho I'm pleased the blood tests have said I don't, I don't know what to do. I'm scared the gp will think I'm a fraud and not believe my joints are really bad. I can't sleep on one side for any length of time because of hip pain.

I mentioned on the list I took to the Rheumatologist about terrible fatigue and insomnia. He never said anything about it. When he wrote to gp, he said that no arthritis showed, and that I may have fibromyalgia. I since looked that up and know that there are a lot of pressure points that indicate this. But the medical he gave never even touched on this - so how can he mention this as an option when he never even bothered to test this theory.

Basically, I'm in pain and very tired, insomniac etc and just don't know what to do or say to my gp. They hate it if you suggest or query things, but if I say nothing then they're just going to say to me that the blood tests showed nothing and there's nowt wrong with you!

    What can I do?

p.s - no psoriasis, but I get excema a lot and for the past 2 months my hands (normally never affected) have been in a right state. Can't wear any rings as the fingers are swollen, itchy and sore

Ibuprofen is an anti inflammatory, the reduction in inflamation reduces pain.

    Paracetamol is a pain killer.

They are very often used together, especially in pyrexic young children to reduce the risk of febrile convulsions when either on its own doesn't control the pyrexia.

As already said, you will get similar results from buying generic paracetamol and Ibuprofen, however there is research to suggest very different (slower) absorption rates for these generics.

There is also suggestion that you get what you pay for to some extent, though usually only in rate of absorption rather than outright pain relief levels, though I would suspect that if analgesia acts quicker then the patient would percieve that analgesia to be better.

Hence why in pre hospital care many patients preferred Entonox to IV Tramadol, as Entonox is almost instant but Tramadol takes a few minutes to administer.

    Hi Cagneyfan,

PLEASE do not give up - not all Rheumeys are that rude. Get your GP to refer you to another hospital (I had the choice of four hospitals in my area when I requested a referral) and try again.

I have over the years had RSI, tennis elbow, tendonitis and other such issues. It was when a family friend noticed my Raynauds (yellow finger syndrome, when you lose circulation to your hands/feet) and suggested that at my age (I was 36 at the time) it could be a pointer to something other than "just" Raynauds. The doctors just wanted to issue drugs to me, but I'd refused, as I just felt it was the wrong way to go. Boy, was I right (and thank the lord for my family friend!!)

I am now under a local hospital Rheumey Dept. for something called Systemic Sclerosis....I'd never heard of it before my diagnosis, but it all my previous issues started to add up when I looked into it.

So PLEASE keep trying, do not let them grind you down. Good luck x

PS I am on a collection of Ibuprofen, Codeine and Paracetemol, so take Lansoprazole to help protect my stomach lining, after Dicolfenac gave it a beating....just to keep within the confines of the original conversation. I pre-pay my perscriptions annually, so I just get as much as I need via my GP
