Single Mum - where are you in the country? Some places have freecycle for plants - just join the group. Go to local fetes / school fares / jumble sales etc - as you may find plants for sale. For any extra plants / equipment - why not ask the local agricultural college? Sure they must have things that they will find that they don't need at the end of term.

Perhaps speak to your neighbours and see if they have any spare plants - and look on childrens TV website - like CBeebies, CBBC and CITV to see if there are any gardening programs which are giving away free seeds to children. Look on gardening magazine sites to see if they are giving away any freebies. Best of luck xx

Our local scout group grow plants to order (bit late for this year but worth thinking about for next) - they put an order form through all the doors with what they're going to have available and grow it all up from seed and you collect it on the given date... my mum's comment when she saw it was "cor they're cheap"

What a fabulous space you have to work with! I would certainly sit with paper and pencil and have a good doodle/daydream about what you would like your garden to look like long term and then divide the work up into annual tasks so you are not over faced. That is the approach we have taken to our garden and it is much, much, much smaller than yours!

Don't try and do too much at once.
Set aside an area for composting - you'll need it when you begin clearing.
Decide on an area for your vegetable garden and try potatoes for your first patch - it's usually recommended 'cos they require little maintenance and help to break up the soil. :)
I recommend a Chillington hoe for digging or Amazon do a cheaper copy:

This is important to get done early as it takes a while for the compost to be garden ready. Since you have such a large space constructing something out of pallets would be good. Maybe have a couple of compost structures so you can move it easily. This site has some interesting info:
