Does Breville's jug kettle nearly scald you on pouring?

Neither my mother nor myself are the types to have the latest gadgets; we like to make appliances last as long as possible. So, when her kettle finally packed in I scoured the Argos catalogue and was surprised to find it stated that Breville was "the UK's No.1 kettle brand" (neither us had heard of it!) So, as stated on this board, I found that Sainsbury's had 70% off certain Breville products which included the brushed stainless steel jug kettle (model VKJ528), unbelievably down to £11.99 from £40.
I was a little disappointed after purchase to note that it certainly didn't look like a £40 kettle; the brushed affect was hardly noticeable and the only remotely 'posh' about it was the illuminated stalky switch. However the biggest disappointment came on pouring the boiled water. A small amount of steam escapes from the back of the poorly fitting lid, making it impossible to fill a teapot in one go because your fingers become uncomfortably hot. It's going back today, and I'll probably never trust a Breville product again.
Has anyone else had similar problems?

I've no experience of the kettle, but that does sound like a really stupid design fault. However I am really fussy about irons. My last two have been 'Breville' and i've been delighted with them, so don't disregard the brand completely.

i have one of these kettles made by kenwood and they do the same. its supposed to have a locking lid but i never did get the hang of it so it vents a little steam from the lid sometimes. also if i refill it immediately after emptying it of boiling water its fairly lethal steamwise. i really wouldn't recommend this style of kettle at all and will go back to a jug kettle next time.

i have a breville kettle very similar to the one you describe, and my dad has several times complained that it burns his hand... but it's not the kettle that's the problem, the reason is that he never properly clicks the front of the lid closed, which leaves a gap at the back where steam gets out... just wondered if you might possibly have been doing the same thing?

I have this problem with my Delonghi Icona kettle which was 60quid. Looks great, but from a practicality standpoint its rubbish. I wouldnt get another one.
  • Yes - our breville kettle is rubbish too! I paid about £30 for it and it is cheap plastic tat, not the 'clean, retro design' it promised - the only reason I didn't take it back is at the time I really needed it for doing baby bottles and just could not be whiffed with the hassle!!

It does indeed leak steam at the back and tbh I think I may get a new one this week, the plastic has started to mis-shape which makes the lid not fit properly - have looked at kettles and won't get breville again.

But, my Breville toasted sandwhich maker was fantastic quality until I dropped it into a sink of hot water while cleaning the plates:rotfl:

Of course it would be your pouring cold water onto the heating element which is nearly 100 degrees after boiling your previous water..

OP which one is it out of these

They all look pretty similar and cant see how the problem occurs as the handles are at the side and not the top
