I was given this kettle as a gift but haven't gotten as far as using it in anger. The problem we have is the kettle stinks of burnt plastic when it's boiling. The first couple of times it was boiled there was smoke coming from it but now the smoke has cleared the smell is still lingering.
Don't suppose anyone has this problem with the vkj528?0 -

Was the smoke coming from inside it? Sounds like something was in there and touching the element to make it burn."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
I've known plenty of problems with a particular model (VKJ144), but by and large, Breville stuff's pretty good and well made.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

For OP - where are you holding the kettle? If you take hold of it lower down the handle, you're protected from any steam by the body of the kettle.
I had to replace my kettle a couple of weeks ago - my EcoKettle had given up the ghost. I was looking for one where I could boil a minimum amount of water, it's amazing how many show the minimum fill at up to ½ litre. Breville didn't, nor did the Philips energy saver one, which matched in better with the kitchen. But I picked up the Breville one for the office as they were using an ancient one that took forever to boil.. so far no complaints there0 -

Guess again! The smoke was actually coming from the outside, possibly between the base and the kettle but it was hard to tell. The plastic smell however is most noticeable inside the kettle especially when there is steam present from a freshly boiled lot of water.0 -

After paying silly prices for various makes of kettles over the years and finding none of them that good or reliable, finally settled on a Tesco cheapy, it boils the water does not look too bad and if it only lasts a few years you could buy three or four of them for the price of some of the so called good makes.0
