:rotfl::rotfl: Really ? So you think writing a formal letter, writing the address on the envelope

I'd write an address, you have to Google an email, probably takes the same amount of time even longer to use Google as you might not find the email you're looking for.

sticking a postage stamp on it

    About 1 second.

and the taking it to your nearest postal box (could be several miles away)

If you'd walk several miles to a post box it's up to you, actually being you it wouldn't surprise me! I'd personally do what I always do when posting thing, put it in the post box I walk past each day when going to work (putting out arm to the left whilst walking, 0 seconds). If I'm not working, pull over at the nearest post box when driving a short distance from me, 10 seconds maybe this time.

This is me though Sirmarcus, it really wouldn't surprise me like I said if all that would take you far longer!

:rotfl::rotfl:Oh dear but still great entertainment !!:rotfl:

Firstly I will quote your penultimate posting on this thread :
    Money_User wrote: »
Writing an email or letter takes the same amount of time. I think a letter before action would probably have more effect than trying to write to a CEO who won't read it anyway.

Or after following the companies complaints procedure. No company has a complaints procedure that says, if all this fails try emailing our CEO.

Your posting is a generic posting attempting to give advice to everyone. I responded in kind by giving my advice to everyone.

Your latest posting then talks about you and how convenient it is for you to write and post letters. Many people do not have this luxury or ability (physically disabled, etc.). For me, I just walk two minutes to my nearest post box; although apart from xmas, b/day, m/day an f/day cards, I always try to use email.

Now with regards your last posting :
    Money_User wrote: »

If people use google properly, they should be able to easily and quickly find any email address. If they can't, either phone the company up (use saynoto0870.com) and ask for it and/or just put a posting on MSE. Me or another user will then advise.

I will also remind again that posting letters cost money (unless you have a freepost address) whereas email does not.

I won't respond to the rest of your posting as it does not provide any value to the OP and any other MSE user.

    Hope this helps.

why are you all saying this is a debt. it is not a debt it is an invoice . it has no legal standing. treat the letter the same as a parking ticket for parking on private land. in another words rip it up and tell them to naff off and let them threaten you to take you too court . if it ever got there the judge would throw the case out. to take you to court they have to prove that you were smoking , and exactly what evidence is there.....NONE. they are trying it on so let them do their worst.; it wont get them very far. they are hoping you are gullible and will pay up but dont

Errr, debts have complete legal standing. Invoices are evidence of a debt.

A debt can often be evidenced by an invoice. But the existence of an invoice doesn't automatically mean there is a debt.

In fact, their terms and conditions say:

You must not smoke in any of our hotels or interfere with our fire detection system. If you do so, we will terminate your Booking without refund and require you to leave the hotel immediately. You authorise us to charge you any costs we incur if you smoke or cause damage in our hotel including costs for specialist cleaning (to make the room fit for sale as a non smoking environment) and the cost of the room for any time period it is unusable. You authorise us to charge this amount to the payment card used in your Booking. We will send you (at the address on the Booking) a breakdown of these charges within 10 working days. We may refuse to accept bookings from you in future.

The OP says he is a non-smoker, and therefore no authorisation was given by him to make any charge. Therefore, there is no debt, and the invoice is wrong.

Sorry I should have said debts (once incurred) have complete legal standing.
