easyJet appear to be tightening controls on hand luggage.

I received the following e mail from easyJet today, it would appear they intend getting tough on carry on items. Sigh, more aggro in the pipeline.
Hand Baggage
From April 5th we have updated our pricing policy for hold luggage and for oversized cabin baggage that needs to be checked into the hold.

The following charges apply:
  • At the airport check-in desk: If you purchase a bag to be checked into the hold and/or we notice that your cabin bag exceeds the maximum allowed dimensions, you will be charged £25 per bag
  • At the boarding gate: If you go directly to the boarding gate and your one permitted item of cabin baggage exceeds the maximum allowed dimensions you will be charged £40 and your bag will be checked into the hold
Remember: easyJet allows one item of hand baggage into the cabin per person; maximum dimensions are 56 x 45 x 25 cm .

To keep our fares low, be able to board the plane as quickly as possible and ensure your comfort onboard, if you bring more than one piece of hand baggage we'll check the extra piece into the hold. Hand bags, briefcases, laptops and laptop bags are all counted as one piece, so if you have a trolley and, for example, an additional hand bag or laptop bag you'll be asked to put those items into your trolley bag. If you can't consolidate your cabin baggage into one single item, one of your bags will be checked into the hold and we will have to charge you £40. We do this to ensure that we don't delay the boarding process and bring everyone to their destination on time.

To get the best price pre-book your hold baggage online. You can do this when booking your flight or by adding it to an existing booking.

Or as it's known "applying their rules".

    What he said ^^^^:rotfl:
BTW I gotta say that EJ have the most liberal carry on allowance of any of the LCC (really got to stop using that term). If you can lift it, you can take it, as long as it's the right dimensions.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

I agree with the other posters.
Easyjet AREN'T getting tough on carry-on items, they're just re-iterating the policy they have for maximum dimensions.

You won't have any 'aggro' as long as you play by their rules.

I wish every airline would actively impose their rules regarding hand & hold luggage.
If they did, there would be enough room in overhead lockers i.e. no massive cabin bags or arguments at check-in about hold bags being overweight and having to pay excess luggage charges.

And NO threads on here about 'my cabin bag is 5cms too big - will I be OK?'

They mentioned this several times on news programs yesterday. I agree its just them clamping down in the same way Ryanair do. I just hope they apply it uniformily across all airports/flights so that we dont get the 'he took that on, why did I get charged when my was the same' type posts.

I flew to Spain with them a couple of months ago. Whilst I was obeying the rules, many were just taking the pee by bringing seriously large suitcases on the Aircraft.

I just can't understand why airlines specify a certain size/weight for luggage and then allow people to do just as they please.

Surely charging people for excess luggage or making them put over-sized hand luggage into the hold at a cost is a good way for airlines to boost profits.
  • Have to agree with others, they are just enfocing exisiting rules, which they should be doing already imho. I flew with BMIbaby yesterday, and as they require quite narrow bags for hand luggage, I had arranged to check my bag into the hold as it was a couple of cms too wide in one direction. By doing this, I lost the option of online checkin and had to pay an airport fee as well. So, those being the rules, that was fair enough, however, when it came to boarding the flight yesterday, they allowed a significant number of ppl on with much bigger bags than mine. Not that I would have risked it knowing this, but still very frustrating

There are those who see EJ`s "updated pricing policy" as enforcing the rules but I

would suggest that there is a difference between `enforcing the rules` and `enforcing the rules together with a hefty price rise`.

Isn`t this site about MONEY SAVING?

Perhaps posters might be more aggrieved when carriers start charging passengers by size?

i agree with the above posts. The costs of checking the bag in before, as far as i was aware, was a bit more. Also, if you look on the site, they have changed their wording.. before, you could have a bag with a duty free purchase bag.. now there is nowhere stated that this is allowed anymore.

The price of checking in at the gate is now the same as Ryanair. I bet they make the dimensions smaller too soon.

It still says in the Easy Jet Baggage section in the carriers' regulations that one duty free purchase bag is allowed as an additional item.
