I have a bowl of potatoes we have pulled up today (the bag they were in has collapsed and the plants were ruined) and as they are small new potatoes size am trying to think of a nice recipe to show them off in - I seem to remember a roasted slices type dish but cant find the recipe - so any suggestions please?

Kidcat...IMHO opinion, the only way to have small new potatoes is steamed and then rolled in lots of butter and chopped mint to serve....

have excess of sage - its really taking off in one of my tubs. How would you go about making use of this - I'm not even really sure how I would use it in my cooking!

sage and onion stuffing? - would that freeze in portions?

I'm also hoping for a basil glut and had ideas about freezing it in icecube portions - I've got ice-cube bags that I don't use. Would you mix it with oil or just sort of puree or chop it.

    help I'm a novice!

Potatoes need to be blanched before freezing or they will go black.

Oh noooooo! Now I find out! I had a rake round on the HM potatoe wedges thread a couple of days ago and a few people said no blanching required so I thought I'd give it a go. Closer inspection, now I'm back from work, reveals that they some of them have gone a bit black, but maybe I'll try cooking some of them anyway. Never mind, I'll know for next time!

On the plus side I stopped off at our local co-op on the way home and they had the mother of all whoopsie sections, normally you have to wait until just before closing so I don't know what was going on. Posh ham reduced from £2.50 to 34p; pasta sauces £2.60 to 35p; mince £3 to 45p; two carrot cake cup cakes reduced to 25p for the pair, pork pies reduced to 30p for 4. I only went in for milk and came out with a big carrier bag full. We, and the cat, will eat well tonight! and everything else has gone into the freezer.

Larumbelle I can't believe your work is still playing silly wotsits - definitely time for the union I think: I hope you get it sorted.

Have a good Friday evening all.

I have just purchased the Plenty cookbook from some foreign bloke whose name I cannot pronounce. But, there are some flipping yummy veggie recipes in there.

I am going to use normal eggs.
  • Afternoon all,
It's been a grand day but starting to look mighty grey as if a storm is coming.
Harvested some more beautiful tatties (boy do i get a tad excited:rotfl:) so have them boiling away at the moment.

I feel a day of preserving coming upon me so ordered some new seals for some old kilner jars we have, and managed to refrain from buying lots of shiny things i really don't need, so i definately feel i deserve a wee glass of vino in a minute:D.

Our next door neighbours (theres only our cottage and theirs) are moving next week to a smaller cottage so inherited two huge wicker lounge things for the garden, felt like someone should be peeling me grapes when i sat in one earlier, but sadly my vine only has a few leaves and no grapes yet (we are born optimists trying to grow grapes in Scotland but hey you never know).

Mardatha hope your son is feeling a bit perkier and send positive vibes to both of you.

    Happy tatty eating everyone x
Moving towards a life that is more relaxed and kinder to the environment (embracing my inner hippy:D) .:j

Re freezing fruit query of yours - personally, to date, I've removed non-edible bits (and chopped into chunks - if applicable):
    - pineapple (skin removed)
    - watermelon (rind removed)
    - bananas (skin removed and chopped in half)
    - grapes
    - damsons
    - apples (stewed with tiny bit of water and little bit of honey)
    - orange/satsuma/clementines (skin removed and divided into segments)
    - currants (ie blackcurrants, etc)

I prepare and divide as appropriate any fruit that seems appropriate (apart from those stewed apples) and put it onto a baking tray and fast freeze in the "heavy duty" section of my freezer. Reason = I dont have a fast freeze tray in the top section of my freezer (something I will certainly make sure of if I have to replace it again ever:().

When the fruit has frozen itself some hours later - I take it off the baking tray and bag it up in ziplock bags and put in the main part of the freezer.

The reason I "tray freeze" it first is to make sure that the fruits remain separate to each other and I can take out just the quantity I require from the relevant ziplock bag. I take out my banana halves a couple at a time and eat immediately as a "sorta banana icecream" and I'm quite partial to grapes straight out of the freezer as well.

I'm still experimenting my way through trying out about every fruit I can think of as frozen at some point - and I certainly try and see if I can eat it straight from the freezer. But then - I'm one of these people who will eat a lot of things straight from the freezer - including chocolate:)

EDIT: Re any texture changes in frozen fruit - as I like to eat a lot of fruit straight from the freezer anyway on the one hand OR put some on top of my breakfast porridge then I'm fine with that personally.

Re the MrsWive new garden - personally I'd rip the hedge straight out and replace it with a mixed edible hedge (which would give me some extra food just from that - and I personally find mixed hedges a lot more attractive than boring box). Re any leaching of goodness from nearby soil by the hedge - nowt to stop you growing food in containers (or maybe raised beds) right by that hedge. By now - I'm learning just which foods arent fussy about having that recommended "at least 6 hours of sunshine per day" and, in fact, maybe actively dislike having so much sun. That is - things like lettuce for instance. Spinach is also a possibility. Mints (in pots!) are also okay with a bit of shade.

Son sounds a wee bit more like himself on the phone, but says the pain from his foot is like standing on a hot coal and not being able to get off :(
