I like to have something in there but fed up spending about a £1 for one of these things
Tesco ownbrand denture tablets were about 19p a tube last year they've gone up to 48p (I think) but still cheaper than the tablets that you are using, and they clean really well (you may need two tabs but give onw a go to start)
Mardatha - I make butter from cream using a rotary whisk. When the cream is really solid I transfer it to a large lidded jar and start shaking. When it transforms back to liquid and solid I strain it and start the rinsing and pressing.
Charis - dripping toast made by spreading toast with the turkey dripping and with a little salt sprinkled over followed by a slice of cake was our traditional CHristmas Day tea when I was a child - it was really yummy and we all looked forward to it. Mind you Turkey dripping has nicer fat and a higher proportion of jelly than beef dripping.
Then again clarified beef dripping is supposed to be the best thing for frying chips (anyone know if this is true?)

Has anyone ever tried to make jam without sugar, but using something like fruit concentrate? I bought some stuff from the local health food shop which was made with raspberries and apple concentrate. Very similar to jam but without the massive amount of refined sugar. I am going to do an online search but just wondered if anyone on here had any experience?
As far as scrap metal collectors go - the ones round here are awful. A bloke a couple of streets away is a wheelchair user, and he will wheel himself to the park at the end of my street and walk round the playground holding onto the railings. He has taught himself to walk again by doing this, going from taking only a couple of steps to being able to walk round the perimeter of the playground, with his stick and the railings for support. I don't know what's wrong with him but he also has no voice and can only speak in a whisper. A couple of weeks ago some scrappy barstewards only came and nicked his wheelchair whilst he was on the far side of the playground! How despicable can you get? If I'd have been there I'm afraid I would have rammed them in the nuts with the wheelchair (pardon my bluntness)!!!!! If it's not nailed down round here, it goes.
1. Re sugar-free jam - i regularly "buy" some through the Lets Scheme - but havent been able to coax the basic method out of the person concerned. I've done a lot of Internet searching looking for "how to". What I have come up with to date is - wait for it...yet another book I bought for my "reference library":
"The super jam cookbook" by Fraser Doherty
This guy has figured out some methods of doing jam without the sugar. Its still in the "waiting room" at the moment for my long list of experiments I will be trying at some point - give me time...give me time....I'm getting through an average of several per week....:rotfl:
2. That is lowest of the low to steal someone's wheelchair:eek:. When you say that "if its not nailed down" it gets stolen in your area - well...I think it was your area today that was featured in a newspaper article re a poor guy/his adult son having a middle of the night break-in from 4 "disguised" men (think it was balaclavas they had on????). Anyway...this happened Wednesday night and, in the ensuing struggle, the innocent householder ended up killing one of them and is currently being interviewed by police. Well - that thing about householders being en route to being acknowledged as entitled to defend their property (as well as their lives) might have come in the nick of time for him. Lets hope justice is done and the householder and his son are acknowledged as "totally in the clear/innocent" on this and that, if justice ISNT done, then his friends/neighbours/etc conduct a massive protest march/campaign generally until it IS done. I would go on a protest march for someone in those circumstances myself - to put pressure on the authorities to acknowledge that this householder should not be penalised in any way - if I were in that area. Much higher rate of social disapproval/penalties on thieves in any context is long overdue IMO.0 -

Today I will be making a raspberry cheesecake and muffins. Luckily my daughter loves them and will probably eat a bowl full herself!
Good news about the neighbours! Raspberry goes really well with white chocolate and makes a great muffin combination. xHad a report for DS7 today on the road to formal autistic diagnosis - whilst it is very accurate it does make for difficult reading, seeing in black and white all his difficulties and the comparisons to "normal" children.
Hope it's a positive step for you all. xxxI have not turned green.
....Yet.
Tis the weekend and we are going away tomorrow for a family "do" at which no expense will be spared but we won't have to spend a thing.Really needed after the week I've had so tonight is an easy dinner that I prepped earlier and ironing in front of some taped tv.
Am also making up a large planter as a gift for someone. Using alot of plants I grew from seeds/babies in a freegled galvinised trough which OH is stencilling with a personalised message. It's going to look great.
Hope everyone has a not too tough weekend. xxx0 -
Jediteacher, PMF and anyone else who wants one have a hug :grouphug:
Well, I called my boss who actually sounded surprised that I wouldn't be back in today (really need the rolleyes smilie back for these occasions) because they are still refusing workplace adjustments. They said they will do a workplace assessment *if* I return to work but aren't willing to implement the changes they have been asked to make. Her exact words were "the world doesn't revolve around you" and "it doesn't matter how long you wait, we're not changing our mind on this". Well, flip you too. I'll see you in court. So, not happy. Applying for absolutely any job I think I might physically be able to do. And when I find one I'll be suing for constructive dismissal as well as disability discrimination!
Not happy about the Ocado voucher thing either
But still not in that bad a mood, considering. Just getting on with things and not dwelling on all this, trying to stay sane! I agree with PMF - some of the loveliest people in the world live on this threadI don't know what I'd do without this 'extended family' and all your hugs, jugs and mugs
I picked a load more raspberries, loganberries and blackcurrants from the garden today. I'm not going to make jam though because (whispers) we still have some of last year's left. I think I'll bung it in the freezer to make food-mixer ice-cream in the summer. Still, at least the fruit looks after itself. Edible veg hasn't really happened this year, apart from a few courgettes, tomatoes and peas. Oh, and a florence fennel and a few carrots that have popped up from last year's sowing :rotfl: Tea is HM lamb kebabs, coleslaw and pitta breads. I've mad a few notebooks instead of getting on with my housework - Junior Monopoly, Scrabble and the E.T Game. I might put them on Etsy / Dawanda later but I need to go wash up soon really.0 -
Ate far too many strawberries so I have ...
 How is it possible to eat 'too many' strawberries?DD will eat a pound of the things by herself if I don't stand over her whilst she has them. I suppose it's my fault ultimately, as rather than giving her chocolate to cheer her up as a toddler, I made a huge thing about giving her raspberries, blackberries and strawberries - when her father left me, she sobbed her heart out and then went and ate strawberries in the bath.
Wish I got a chance to have more of them - my strawbs are throwing out runners rather than flowering.
Already got plans for the next megacourgette - not sure whether to try courgette flowers or not, seems a lot of oil to use for something so small.
Sausage, mash, home grown shallot gravy and mushrooms tonight!I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Ginnyknit - Snap! All my tea today was whoopsied or grown by me/neighbour.
Seakay - my Grandad used to have a fish and chip shop and he used to use beef fat - came in big slabs. When chippies started using oil lots of people boycotted their chips at first. Suspect it's all oil now though
Berries - all types - definitely happy foods"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0 -
Had a report for DS7 today on the road to formal autistic diagnosis - whilst it is very accurate it does make for difficult reading, seeing in black and white all his difficulties and the comparisons to "normal" children.
KC, my sister is autistic and so are quite a few of my friends. And one of my bestest buddies' daughters has aspergers. Don't worry too much about the differences, these things always look scarier written down and frankly, not many kids would pass for 'nomal' when it's all written down like that anyway!!!! Your son is and only ever will be himself - this report doesn't change who he is, it's just a label, albeit one that might help to get him some more support. The National Autistic Society is meant to be very helpful.
My sister wasn't diagnosed until she was in her mid-teens. Before that they just called her 'backwards' (she had minor oxygen starvation at birth). I often wonder whether things might have been different for her if she had been diagnosed young.0 -

It's fab, but only if you only eat chips twice a year and live a virtuous life the rest of the time! McDonalds are supposed to use dripping in their fries almost everywhere except the UK. And they allegedly put an additive in our fries to make them taste more like the ones fried in dripping.
I like to skim the fat from my chicken stock and use that for roast potatoes. It's very good. My step-nan called it schmaltz and considered it a part of her Jewish heritage.0 -
