Reverbe,is it time to consider moving? I feel for you both, for you and your flatmate who seems to be dealing with things like an ostrich, maybe he just needs help, has he been to citizens advice,or looked on here?

Old he has consulted a debt management firm and is paying off his debts bit by bit but it doesnt stop there. He can and should go further. He has changed his ways a lot but theres a way to go.I know there are a lot of things I do that he could do also like use teabags more than once, walk whre he takes the bus(he walks to the pub to play his darts on Sunday when he could walk its only 10 mins walk, he says he gets hot in there cos they cook food in a tiny low roofed pub and he woudl get even hotter if he walked there too.. !!!!!!??)

I know if I had 5ok of debt Id NEVER go out. hell I dont now and I dont owe anyone anything..:p

OK charlies-aunt ,which Ronnie are you?:D

I think that trying to live as OS as possible is the beginning of "the turn"

My DH has never seen it. I constantly make reference to that and 'the phantom raspberry blower of old london town' and he just looks bemused. He's never seen Morecambe and Wise either. Deprived childhood:rotfl:

Charis I know what you mean about using the car in a social/enjoyment sort of way and I certainly do that. I was just trying to work out a way to get me to have more NSDs. Calculating the cost of going to a supermarket more often than I needed to - and buying stuff I could do without - has motivated me to go to the shops less. But I'd be stuck for a social life without the car as I don't live in a town.

I can see your point Lizzy but I was really shocked when I worked out my cost per mile travelled, back in April when I did my annual review. I figured that if I was paying that much to keep the car (like you, it's that or become a recluse) I might as well enjoy it now and then because overall it wouldn't make a lot of difference.

For me there's not much logic in no spend days because what I don't buy today I'll have to buy next week. We don't have massive choice in our two little supermarkets. My financial weak spot is taking my DS with me when I go shopping.

I'm 41 and we bought our first house at 21. Couldn't begin to imagine 2 21 year olds in their first jobs managing to do that now.

Not a chance. Me and my OH are 22 and both finally have jobs after 3 months unemployed for me and 5 months for OH. I'm now working a minimum wage job which I'm so grateful for but it's not exactly the job I got my degree for. I was bought up to be careful with money and my mum was remarking on how me and OH are doing things the old fashioned way ie being grateful for donated household items, saving up for a nice tv rather than just going out and buying it on credit but I can't help feel that most people my age haven't grown up yet and are still having a good time whilst I'm struggling with making ends meet.

On my sad days being frugal makes me more materialistic as I get sick of scrapping by and wish I could go out and not have to worry. But that's why I love reading this thread, turns being OS back into fun again!

Ooooh the Morecambe and Wise breakfast sketch - classic!

12 months ago I wouldn't have even looked at prices,I'd have just put them in the trolley, and moaned how costs were going up.Now I feel so much more in control of everything:) I've taken so much on board through this thread - can't wait until I get a garden of my own:D

İ was listening to the radio at lunchtime about the class system and it explained how the call centre staff of today have become the new workers exposed to the draggonian work practices that were practiced during the 'victorian' era. its coming full circle!

İ am coming home to the uk to survey the differences that have occured during the past 12 months. i expect lots of things to have happened but on previous occasions i have been 'disappointed' as not much seems to change.--what should i look for as radicle changes in the uk--shops and behaviour??-last time i left the uk i was upset by how everyone was so discoutious and generally !!!!sed off people were! the bus driver hated everyone on the coach and on the road!-the charity shops that i love to shop in were getting pricey and scarce of decent products--should i avoid them?

I've found that charity shops are becoming more expensive, especially the big name charity shops, I've seen things in there that are dearer than buying it new from the original shop! Smaller local charity shops are generally cheaper but I've found in ours the quality of things isn't as good.

I know for a fact that we wouldn`t be coping now if I hadn`t had a lifelong thriftiness, or way of living. So those of you who are finding thriftiness a daily challenge, it becomes habit and a satisfying pleasurable one at that. I would not have wanted to be born with a silver spoon in my mouth, I have loved every minute of earning my future and always have something challenging to look forward to, even now

Now that will be something to get me pondering for the evening whilst I cook dinner in a minute for sure...

I recall Shirley Goode (ie well-known cook/authoress from a coupla decades back) frequently saying on her blog that she likes a challenge/relishes the chance to show how good with money she can be and suchlike sentiments and my mind boggles every time she says this and now you are saying the same...:rotfl::rotfl:

Hmmm......I admit that I've turned down chances to earn more money on the one hand or marry money on the other hand - so I HAVE done that and not grabbed for every £ that wafted across in front of my nose. If I dont agree with the way money comes in my direction - then I do turn it down:cool:.

I DO admit though that I would really like/seriously miss the standard of living I had expected to have by now (which is still a very "ordinary person in the street" standard of living - nothing at all fancy about it in any way) and I really really dislike the necessity to economise to manage at all. So - I think we all have a different take on what our personal feelings are about economising - and 'twould be easier personally for me if I could just think "Just think of it as an enjoyable challenge ceridwen" rather than "Darn it - oh well...best just get on with it then since I have to...".

Guess we will all vary on our attitudes to having to...

...<wanders off wondering what the percentages of peeps are who:
    - think of it as a challenge
    - resent it
    - thoroughly hate it
    - etc>
