Don`t panic FS. Just think of how little variety you actually need to stay healthy. I have concentrated on some grains, cereals and beans to add to what I already have so: brown rice, jumbo oats, wholemeal and unbleached white flours, quinoa (for protein and vitamins). I already have dried pulses and buckwheat (another nutritious grain) and barley and that will do for my basics.
I also do sprouted alfalfa during the dark months and I have loads of seeds
If you must have meat then I suggest that you get it into the freezer within the next couple of months0 -
I picked up a bag of cous cous today in Asda however I'm not sure what to do with it. I was thinking it would for some lunches but I heard it can be really bland so any suggestions on what to do with it would be much appreciated.
I do know I should soak it overnight but that's as far as I know.0 -

do you buy your oats in bulk too Kittie? We get through a lot anyway so I wouldn't mind stockpiling.0 -

I would check the instructions on the side of the packet as the couscous I get is pretty much instant. I had some couscous today that I'd used to make a nice salad and I'll be using the leftovers for lunch tomorrow:
Take 250g of couscous place in a large bowl and add 300ml of boiling water. Cover and let sit of 5 minutes.
After 5 mins, fluff up the couscous with a fork. I then added: lots of chopped coriander, some dried apricots chopped up small, some chopped chives and some diced peppers. Then I mixed up 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 tablespoon sesame oil and 1 tablespoon of walnut oil and poured it over. Mixed it all up and left it in the fridge overnight. It was great today and will be even better tomorrow.0 -
have been trying to post 4 times:mad: Prob me!
BERTIEBOTS= Are you drinking enough water-try large glass warm water(with squirt lemon jui0ce and 1 teasp honey IF you have it)Great clearer of complexion(ahem)and system regulator:o 1st thing in the morning.
2 teasp per person wheatgerm in porridge is a great boost to dry skin-also add to muesli or stew/soup-you won't taste.
Try vitamin E capsules-cheap loose from grain stores or on offer health stores.Jab capsule with clean needle or pin onto 3rd finger.Dab on cheekbone near eyes, also wrinkled or scarred areas, then swallow for internal absorption and benefit. Much cheaper and just as effective as 'serum' and' intensive' capsules from beauty conglomerates.

you wont need to soak it overnight as its not a legume (bean etc)
If it is asda own brand i think it gives you a recipe on the back, but you are right it can be very bland. I eat a lot of couscous as it is low fat and i have gall bladder problems. I admit to buying the ainsley harriott stuff and pimping it up a bit using left over roasted veg, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, olives, chopped cucumber, tomatoes, left over new potatoes, red onion, sweetcorn, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, cubes of edam, mozzarella, apple, dried fruit, tinned pulses, chickpeas, raw shredded beetroot, nuts, cubes of feta, celery, carrot all go well with couscous. It depends what flavours and veg you like really.
To flavour the plain couscous you can use different herbs and spices and stockcubes mixed in with the boiling water. My favourite seasoning is Moroccan and harrissa. Hot pepper sauce may be an option, and some salad dressings should work well, it does absorb flavour well. Good luck and hope you enjoy it.0 -
I love cous cous..I usually make it with a chicken stock cube and add roasted pepper, red onions and sainsburys basics greek style salad cheese

nomnomnom!! Takes about 5 mins .......AHA!!!! Added to my list as I haven't made any for ages
When I say roasted I mean done in a heavy iron pan till caramelised (with a little oil),I have a great pan I got from ikea which is easier than warming up the oven
BTW thanks triffles..I know one of my downfalls is not drinking enough and I am making an effort to drink more water and have cut coffee out after 6pm. I dont know if its just me but I cant drink a big glass of water in one go, so I am trying little and often! I find the pre flavoured cous cous too strong, but I do buy it and use it one part to three parts plain cous cous, I find that gives it enough flavour, and then add some veg etc to that. Or else, just make it with some stock with a pinch of chilli chucked in.It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

Thanks for loads of ideas with the cous cous. It's going to be a week of using up things for lunches. I have some asda smart price mozarella so that should do 2 days along with some cherry tomatoes and I also have some little advocados which will need used up.
I'm lucky to have a fridge at work so I need to get myself into the habit of taking a salad rather than sandwiches as bread really isn't good for my weight. Unfortunately I have a bread addiction like other people crave chocolate. Ever cloud though- I mist be one of the few people who couldn't care less about chocolate in fact yesterday I noticed there was still a hugh box of Thornton's continental from christmas in the store cupboard!0
