I'm from a mining family too. Thatcher is not well liked by them.
If the drought is going to send prices up even further, we're just going to have to bite the bullet. We can't possibly stockpile everything, including dairy/meat etc. People are seriously going to have to go without if this comes to pass.0 -
Well, at long lost we have had some proper rain. The garden is looking lusher already.
I had an enjoyable afternoon with dh yesterday. We went for a stroll and popped into the farmers market. Then we went for a drink on the way home. The younger boys went swimming with their uncle.
I have a big shop arriving tomorrow with lots of pasta and rice in it. I really need to sort out another freezer so I can store produce from the garden.
I have a mountain of ironing to do today and no excuse not to do it since I can't get into the garden.GC 2011 Feb £626.89/£450 NSD3/7 March £531.26/£450 April £495.99/£500 NSD 0/7 May £502.79/£500

Just to let you know that Doves have increased their prices already - at least on bread flour. The sack is going to cost me an extra £3.50.0

Thank you for opening my eyes about how it works with the bigwigs. I'm disgusted that as a society, a British Society, that 'we' allow that to happen, are allowing these things to escalate to the point of absolute no return. It make me angry and adds fuel to the fire that I was thinking yesterday, to put the fruit and veg proportion of my budget into my local organic box scheme. Not very MSE, or money saving but fruit and veg is the staple in our diet and quite frankly it matters until we can grow more and more ourselves.
I agree jamanda, so many people cannot see what is in store for our future. They're blinkered into thinking "we deserve better, deserve these items" I know my family do. Items such as hot chocolate, crisps, wine, even breakfast cereal now I see as luxuries and are having to, or choosing too to make my money go further, do without. Meat I forsee will be next to be scrapped out of my menu plans. I'm not bitter, I'm not expectant that we must have it, I don't see we deserve it because we live in 2011, I'm realistic that you simply cannot have what you cannot afford.
I'm all over the place at the minute aren't I. Talking about expensive veg one paragraph and not affording meat the next. To be honest, I do feel a bit lost, a bit like what to do for the best but I am so greatful for being here, finding here and learning - accepting even, that things are fast changing and our habits need to change too.
Oh to be as self suffient as possible. I'll never be self suffient but what I can do is choose wisely, buy ingredients that go further and to make things from scratch.
I want to shake most of my family because they're so blinkered. I mentioned I was going to make my own butter and I tell you I went red with embarrassment over the ridicule. They'll see, soon, and it might be to late to learn all I already know. I'll be keeping my families head above water while they're in a panic because they suddenly find they're living well out of their means, if they're not already.0 -
I'm 100% with you on the treatment of farmers. I'm a farmers daughter and am heartbroken at the way they are being treated and driven to financial ruin. It's absolutely soul destroying for most of them, I've lost count of the number of family friends who have given up farming within the last few years. We're a tight knit community and when someone sells up everyone goes along to their dispersal sale to show support. I hate the sales with a passion, I'm fairly detached about most business decisions but to watch someone entire life's work being sold at knock down prices is horrendous. Most of these farms have been in the family for generations and it's just awful. I just feel that it's something that will probably come the way of my family sooner rather than later.
It's not just the farmers who are being treated like this - basically anyone who supplied supermarkets get the same deal. If you think your blood pressure can stand it it's worth reading the book below which is a real eye opener.

Sometimes I feel I need to toughen up and accept that this is just life now but I do struggle with the state of things and the way we are being treated. It's beginning to get out of hand - a simple trip to the supermarket has become war (in my mind) and I can feel my aggression building as soon as I arrive in the car park. I'm a pretty laid back individual and this is really not a good place to be in.
Anyway, enough misery from me. I must remember that there are many more people in much worse positions.0 -

T,
Think I am just turning into a grumpy old woman
You sound perfectly sane and reasonably grumpy (as opposed to unreasonably grumpy!) to me!
Do you think we should start a Grumpy but sane old women's club?Aspire not to have more but to be more.
