I have decided to re-vamp my freezer for the winter. It is one of those big uprights with drawers and it has got the usual bits and pieces in it and it is full. Bread, cakes, ice cream, stock, meals blah blah. I am thinking that I should be using it for basic things ie meat, fish and veg from my garden. I don`t have space for a second freezer so I am jolly well going to have to get more organised re daily food. So now I am on a mission and will clear one drawer at a time. Tbh it was a very good `dumping` ground for extra food and so on but I am going to get back to being more os again. We never froze cakes and bread and meals before we all had freezers
Its a toss up ie saving energy by batch baking and freezing or saving future price rises by storing basic ingredients and I am thinking that I have to hit the second option0 -
Kittie hay in london is :eek::eek:
I tried our local stables for a bale £9:eek: one of the joys of living in London I guess.
I paid £3, 2 years ago and was expecting £5 now maybe, but at £9 I'll give it a miss this year.0 -

It was mentioned about the soil being dust a few times, well it is. even clay soil that is cultivated and when the wind blows (every day here) then I come home from the allotment with a filthy face. I have to wear big specs to keep the dust out of my eyes. Next step is dessert. We need to get back to small fields and not those big monstrosities that the wind sweeps over

We are forecast rain from Wednesay onwards which would be great, but the met office changes its mind almost hourly at the moment so I am not holding out a great deal of hope!

the hay situation is desparate, inputs,ie fertilizer and diesel for the tractor has risen sharply. the crop is low due to theweather and not as much fert being applied because of price. hay will be dearer than previously.0

Oh I so wish we could trust food again.0 -
Ooh, lots of interesting posts today, really making me think.
Energy - think we need to be far more self sufficient as a nation, would prefer this to be green options (wish the govt would get on with this and stop dithering) but short term coal would be next best, I suppose. Greater incentives for solar panels, as Ceridwen suggests, would be good.
Supermarkets - would also recommend Felicity Lawrence - Not on the Label - a real eye opener on the relationship btw food producers and the supermarkets.
Drought - is it officially yet? Should'nt we have hosepipe bans etc (or have I missed something?).
Was also thinking about my freezer, only small - usually has quite a bit of bread in it, probably not best use of space. Think maybe more prepped veg, like sliced peppers, cooked red cabbage (seems to freeze well) and any veg patch surplus. Overordered soup mix from AF, arrived today - 12 packs (!) but actually quite pleased now as could be the basis of many meals this Winter!
Think this thread will be invaluable in months ahead - told OH about butter making, he was quite impressed - think he fancies having a go!
Thanks everyone for ideas, info and keeping me cheerful:D.0 -
Anybody know a good site for bulk seeds and grains that will deliver to Scotland ?
I am struggling to get the garden to do much, the OH didnt get round to digging the new bed i asked for, he not really well enough tbh. I need more !!
I wish I was a good cook, think there's a lot of knacks for making simple cheap things taste great that I don't know.
Well done to all the younger ladies in here who are getting stuck in to OS. It's really the only way to beat the system .0
