Bertie, cleaning companies are in a class of their own when it comes to bad management and stupidity. I was a supervisor for OCS and then Mitie Olscot and they were unbelievable.

Am just catching up on this week's posts-thank you everybody as I have really looked forward to reading these all week as a treat at the end of a very stressful week at work:AStill finding use of icons and posting a bit difficult but learning!
Sorry to hear of Redladys loss-pets are really the furry heartbeat of a home. I believe, though,as others have said that we do all meet with our loved ones when we pass over.Remembered you when lighting my candle tonight.
Grey Queen- you have cheered me up so much laughing at your posts!I'm your height but 18st.at last weigh in:eek: so hope that makes you feel like a slip of a girl!Doesn't really bother me unless at Dr. and having the obligatory checks and being given a diet sheet-then I go home and have cheese on toast!I dress quite theatrically anyway(cheaply) think floaty layers and tell myself that Attitude is All!
Speaking of which.I was striking quite an o/s attitude tonight-having saved up used tea bags for a few days I put them in a large bowl, put a kettle of boiling water over them, fished them out when water nicely brown, then put 2 greyed white bras in for a swim for 5 mins, rinsed in cold water.Result-old bras flesh-coloured ready to wear under filmy shirts etc.Tried this before-no tea stains on clothes even if hot day. Sleep well-kind thoughts and hugs to anyone in need of some x

What a great idea trifles, never thought of doing that and got a couple of past their best bras I'm going to try it- will start saving those teabags.
Re- your dress-style- I'm a similar weight and on the look out for cheap clothing, the floaty layers sound great- can you give me suggestions on where to buy? Many thanks.

Love this thread, getting so many wonderful ideas and the support here is wonderful x

And - to make you giggle - I had a dance with my hens tonight. I find that if I hold a handful of mealworms above their heads and sing and move my hand in time to the music (Abba's 'Dancing Queen' works well :D) they will step in time to the tune :rotfl:I don't do it for very long as it's a bit of a tease for them, but it makes me giggle and my neighbour thinks I'm cracked. Do you think we could win Britain's Got Talent? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Someone's been watching Snowball on YouTube then:rotfl::rotfl: - ie the dancing cockatoo. He's funny - particularly when dancing to the Back Street Boys. So - if someone wants a laugh for about 4 minutes then google for him. I would give a link - but maybe better not because I notice theres (TM) in the title of some Snowball clips these days - so dont know whether that means it some sorta "Trademark - dont copy our clip" thing and, if so, whether its enforceable in fact or no...

Am totally fedup of news reports screaming about a heatwave and record temps. We have cool grey skies and a cold wind, forecast is rain today... temp to hit a sizzling 11C this afternoon :(:( I have to put a coat on to go out to the hens.
Bought leeks from the garden centre, they were a doz for £3.49. Will be handy for soup.
Keep sitting down with my cookbook (yes I only have one !) and trying to menu plan, but canny really get into it. "Forgotten Skills of Cooking" by Darina Allen. Is a huge book -so big that I figured it would be a good idea as it has to have everything in it :D Food is going up so much that I need to try it though.
Feeling sort of low this morning and trying to get meself psyched up to go and do something - but not trying very hard :D

Re the butternut squash seeds - dont think I'll be trying to grow them myself then (even if/when I get a better house) - as they dont sound like "value to the square inch" and would totally take over if I even tried with the "matchbox garden" I have at present. So - I guess I'll have to keep buying my butternuts. At least I've found its one of the few vegetables I'm okay about eating from frozen - so can chop off into chunks whatever I dont want at the time and pop it in bags in the freezer and I still find it edible when it comes out later.

Hmmm...now shall I or shant I try roasting those squash seeds to eat them then? Tries to remember which type of squash/pumpkin/whatever it was that I tried to roast the seeds of before and couldnt work out why anyone did so - as I was just chomping through gritty/chaffy stuff. At that point - I got stuck and thought "Wonder if I'm getting this all wrong somehows - and its a Turkey scenario (ie I got mouthfuls of chaff trying to eat some seeds in Turkey - until a local told me I was supposed to crack them open with my mouth and just eat the kernel - duh!!!).

:) I know it's churlish to look out on a flawless blue sky and strong sunlight, heading to 20 degrees later today according to the weather forecast, and WISH FOR RAIN but..........it's getting disheartening.

Well, if it isn't too late, it'll definitely rain in 11 days over the whole of England. I'm saying that because that's when I'm over and rain follows me. I arrived in Australia and we switched from drought to flood, quite literally. It's now winter, which is traditionally dry even when they're in the wet cycle of weather, and it's been raining pretty solidly for about 4 days now. All of this and I live on what is named "The Sunshine Coast".

So, in 11 days, get your rainhats and brollies ready, because you're in for a deluge.

I'll blame you then Softstuff if we get absolutely deluged hereabouts - errr...followed by "Wonder if that means Softstuff is around my area then and might like to meet for a cup of coffee somewheres (and if shes checking in t'Internet at all whilst here...)"

Hope you have a good visit here.

Wanders off still contemplating the fact I havent yet come across a nice clear webpage anywheres that calculates exactly how much of each food plant is needed per person to give a good supply of it throughout the year. Prompted by checking out my strawberry plants today and there's a few more ripe ready for me to eat - but its not enough for a portion worth. Guesstimate that one needs maybe 6 early ones, 6 medium season ones, 6 late season ones per person to get a reasonable supply throughout the whole season and have a portion worth to pick each time there's some ripening?

So - so far my calculations come to - I think its:
    Per person =
    6 strawberry plants per "season"
    1 courgette plant
15 tomato plants (inc. to allow for ones for bottling for later in the year instead of canned ones).
2 reasonable size type nasturtium plants (yep..I eat the leaves and flowers of that in salad).

Thats my guesstimates to date FWIW...

Mardatha, hpe you are feeling more chipper soon. You could just give up on today and go back to bed? Or go and try to train your chickens to dance?:D

Ceridwen I have never heard of Snowball but I might go and look for him now. Do you think if I project his videos onto a big screen in my yard it might be a good training aid for my dancing chooks?

Softstuff, I'm calling border control and telling them not to let you in! We need some warm sunshine in Manchester, not more rain, thank you very much!

I have just had to dash out to the chooks as Morticia was cackling in alarm - there was a cat in the yard. It soon made itself scarce but this is worrying me. I do like cats, but not near my hens! The girls are now safely back in their pen but I will have to keep a really close eye on them from now on.
