CA, I am always going on about vitD. In this country all of us are low because we dont get enough sunshine. We take 2400iu a day, bought from Amazon. And I get my doc to test every 3 months to check that my levels aren't too high.

Mardartha, that is a big dose. I am extremely deficient in VitD and am on prescribed supplements of D3 and calcium for the foreseeable future but I don't take that much every day. I was told that 2000iu per day was the maximum recommended amount so you must really need it.

I got told that's the proper maintenance dose :) But I've been on it for 18 months now HBJ, and my level is still only 80 which is not too high. So it must either take a long time to build up or Scots must be really low. My friend (a doctor) takes 5000iu and swears that's the best dose ! Probably people should google and read and check things out for themselves really :D

My Vitamin D levels were off the bottom of the scale this time last year, despite a good diet and spending at least an hour outside every day in all weathers. After 6 months on oral supplements I was still grossly deficient. I had an injection of 30,000 ius which led to my levels dropping and since then I have been on 5,000ius a day.

Unfortunately our local path lab will only test annually because they say Vitamin D is such a safe supplement.

Makes you wonder what it's all about, why so many of us are deficient and why the medical establishment have now decided it is so important.

    Hi Ceridwen

You should still have time to plant BN Squash - mine are just about ready to go into the ground. They germinated very quickly in my small heated propagator and they do need warmth to germinate, but an airing cupboard will do.

How big? Imagine a fine healthy courgette plant then double/treble......... You can't really train them upwards either. Mine are going into a patch I've cleared on my "allotment" (I've got front and back gardens and an allotment shaped piece of overgrown land as well). I'm putting in quite a few, not just for the squashes but to create weed smothering ground cover too.

I did these for the first time last year, from a packet of seed. Got two big ones and 4 smaller ones. The seeds cost about £1-50 and no other costs so good value compared to supermarket. The skins hardened up so they kept for ages as well.

If you've got the space go for it. Don't need any looking after, although if you put on in a pot prepare to spend hours watering.

I'm not suggesting you're on the wrong dose :D. I probably am.:p Your level of 80 is pretty good so it must be working. Mine is <12. :o

It's definitely a supplement I would recommend to anyone in the North of Britain but I would recommend they see a doctor first. ;)

There's a bit more info here for anyone who's interested.

Went to Homebase today....they had a load of strawberry plants (3 shelves full) on offer, so I had a quick look round to see if I needed anything else, then went back to get some strawbs. They were gone!!

Another lady was standing there looking as puzzled as me, so we asked an assistant. We couldn't have picked a snootier one. She told us - in a condescending tone - that the strawberry season was over, they couldn't hold onto stock forever, and they had to clear shelves to make way for new stock. Fair enough, but where were all the strawb plants now?

    "In the skip." :eek::mad:

Me and the other lady were pretty gobsmacked, and both of us said "well, if you're going to throw them away, can we buy them? As many as you can give us, please." The assistant REALLY didn't want to go to the yard, but we managed to persuade her. She came back with TWO. "That's all I could reach." So I pointed to a tall thin male assistant and asked if she could ask him for help. "No, that is all" she said. And left us.

I'm seriously considering writing to head office. Even if the plants went to charity, it would still be better than DUMPING THEM!! Not even recycling them, they're in a skip with all the other general waste!!

    GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

Today has been a very stressful day - DS12 went for the start of his ASD assessment and that was truly awful, the things he said were both distressing and frightening. Followed by a visit to the solicitor - who gave us the good news that we finally have a date to move and that the house will be vacant by Monday - so we can exchange/complete Friday (yippee).
Off to bank to transfer money no problem - Dad went to do his - major problem - bank refused!!

First they wanted passport - he doesnt have one - then photo license - again he doesnt have one. Then they simply refused - even to allow a faster payment by debit card! He asked to close account and have his money back and they refused that too. Spoke to my bank who said that if a customer came in with their debit card they could do a faster payment at the counter and its all done - but dads bank wont. What is so upsetting is that he transferred the money in there last week and checked what he needed to do to send to solicitor and they said just bring your card in!!
Thankfully he managed to get into another branch who were exceptionally helpful and have agreed to get him cash for tomorrow which can go into my bank and I will transfer it next week.
But the stress is showing am a nervous wreck!!

I really believe I will never willingly put myself to this stress again. :) It better be worth it is all I can say. :)

In the skip....that's scandalous...I would defo write to h/o about that as it's so flippin' wasteful!

All these big chains are so bloomin' obsessed with "seasons" for everything...when we got married last year at the beginning of September I tried to pick up some last minute addtional thank-yous for my 3 bridesmaids only to be told in the "chain" card retailers who share a name with a former US president that "wedding season is over" so we're low on that type of thing & won't be getting more until next year!!! Whaaaaattttt....people get hitched 12 months of the year!!!!!!!!!! I know the summer months are the "peak" but really some common sense please!

My free to a good home mobi has arrived & is up & running....seems to be in perdectly good working order so just a matter of seeing how I get on with it I guess.

:jSo glad it's Friday as it's been a busy ol' week.

theres always something to foul up plans kidcat, isn't there, even when you have checked the right way to do things. As for your son - things are better said so someone knows than festering inside a mind -whatever age. Hope all goes smoothly now for you.

I keep my vitamins next to the pc and usually remember to take them when one of you guys mentions them better than never taking them!:o

I think we have time to plant things still as I am convinced that summer is going to last till October. The peas I thought the meeces had eaten are finally coming up :j but I planted extra in the greenhouse and they are coming up :j and seeing as the insects etc have eaten my beans I will plant peas there instead. It so strange whatever I grow between the shed and the house in tubs does amazing, but the other half is only of use for spuds and kale. I guess any veg I manage whether its tons of peas kale and spuds is better than nothing. I will carry on regardless until every pot and square inch is producing ( to be read in Winston Churchills voice ):rotfl: From what I am reading here every single bit of veg will be needed the way things are going.

I didnt cave in and go to Mr T. With 4 pounds in change I went on the market -

    1 bag of spuds
    4 apples
    1 cooked ham shank
    3 small baguettes
    1 small sliced loaf (yesterdays)
I am quite happy with that, the sliced ham was 1.19 for 100 gms so the shank was warm from the oven complete with crackling and will do at least 2 meals.
Clearing the junk to travel light
    Saving every single penny.
    I will get my caravan
