GreyQueen, the salad leaves we're eating aren't in the ground, I grow them in a sort of shallow bowl thing about the diameter of a dinner plate, in my little plastic green house.
I had two good-sized strawberries ripening nicely (the first of this year), and went down about half an hour ago to see if they were ready to pick today, and one has a great big chunk taken out of it :( I suspect one of the fat pigeons that frequent the garden is the guilty party.
Large load of washing about to go out on the line, it's a lovely drying day here at the moment. Softstuff, perhaps you'd better restrict yourself to GreyQueen's part of the country, as she is so much in need of rain :rotfl:

I got told that's the proper maintenance dose :) But I've been on it for 18 months now HBJ, and my level is still only 80 which is not too high. So it must either take a long time to build up or Scots must be really low. My friend (a doctor) takes 5000iu and swears that's the best dose ! Probably people should google and read and check things out for themselves really :D

Perhaps your problem is with absorbing vit D rather than getting it?
15 min a day of weak sunlight on skin area = to hands and face should be enough and then you get vit D from a healthy diet as well
Supplements should change your levels within a few weeks - in my view Drs are too content to leave us on repeat prescriptions without investigating further. I have been on huge amounts for ages, levels are not going up and I eat oily fish etc and do the gardening and walk to the local shops. I should be fine but levels are still low. I asked where all this vit D I'm taking could be going and was given a vague answer about being processed by my liver. I asked if an over worked liver could account for any of my other symptoms (it could) and if I risked permenant liver damage without even the benefit of adequate vit D levels (possibly could) and Dr just said they didn't know and gave me another scrip! Can't cope with the way that these so called people of science show no curiosity or need for answers. Trying to do my own research but as a very average arts student many years ago find it difficult to sift through for relevent information.

:( It seems that those of us on the westen side are getting too much and here on the eastern side we're getting beggar-all. It's hot and sunny here with a fresh breeze, my lottie is a dustbowl and my waterbutts are nearly dry.

:( And I've got another blimmin' puncture in my front bike tyre. That's 2 in about a month and none for 30 years (yes, honestly) beforehand.

:D Thank goodness for tea, it's all that's keeping me sane. Ahem, sane-ish. :o

:) Have watered the submerged-milk-bottle watering points in the pea and broad bean rows and spent 2 hours chiselling couch grass out of the Long Barrow aka the Alpine Carrot Bed, for the purposes of squash-installation in the next 10 days or so. The idea is that they can rampage all over that and not interfere with the rest of the lottie.

Well, gonna play on the interweb until it boots me off at 4 pm then go see the Magic Greengrocer to see what's on the whoopsie section and also what's in the charity shops.

:) Have a good day one and all and for goodness sake stop hogging that rain, me and Rosie and some others need them badly.

Its winter here, has rained now for most of May, my garden is flattened - I've an awful feeling its going to be like last "summer" - started raining in May and forgot to stop until October. Very depressing.

I drove the 40 miles to my nearest tesco today - was stupidly expensive. Really don't know what to do - we don't have home delivery, and I used to drive to the city to shop (80 miles) but will the price of petrol it's hard to know what to do. Something is going to have to give though (probably me).

Ginnyknit I'm going to be in the Manchester area in July, and my friend tells me there are loads of great markets - he's pretty non-specific though! Are there any with wool or fabric stalls that you know of?

    Thanks,

I have spent the morning in the garden planting out a few flowering plants. I do it because I enjoy it but I guess it is OS because I grew them from seed instead of buying plants. Also I have put some flowers near the veg to try and encourage helpful insects.

Then I had prunes and custard after my lunch. Now that has got to be old style, especially as the prunes were past their best before date (they tasted fine, as I knew they would).

Off to a**da later I doubt there will be any woopsies on a Saturday afternoon but need to go today as OH is willing to come and do the heavy bits as my back is giving me warning signs again. I usually do online shopping when said back is misbehaving but it has crept up on me and life will be eassier if we go today. Glad to say we could last for a while if we had to. I have lurked on this lovely board for long enough to have decent supplies in, but it is nice to get the fresh stuff and not have to 'make do'.

I am going to mix some bread dough before we go so we can have home made pizzas for tea, yummy.

Hope everyone has a decent afternoon.

If I could I would pack it up and send it to you - "a present from Co Down":rotfl:

Actually until 10 days ago my allotment was like yours - solid concrete... I only got it this year (after 6 years of waiting:eek:). BCC now split the original 80' by 30' plots into 2 as they find 40' by30' enough for most people and they can give it to 2 waitees then. Do other councils do this? I have to say mine is plenty big enough as I battle to get it under control.

I need to get my proverbial in gear and curb my spending ways. When I got paid last month it was my first pay cheque in quite some time so I splurged. I am trying to save for uni and a car. No more eating out or takeaways and I will make an effort to make my lunch for work rather than buying rubbish Tesco sandwiches. Not going to buy any DVD's instead me and my OH have started with Lovefilm renting DVD's and games works out much cheaper for us (not to mention got a free month, cashback and an M&S voucher!). I don't go out drinking much these days due to working most weekends so that is already saving me money. When my current cleaning products run out I am replacing with things such as value bleach, bicarb soda, stardrops and vinegar.

I'm in a similar boat to you WCSthough my nearest tesco is 60 miles away, I shop once a month now and stock up on the things that really make a difference price wise if we had to buy them locally. If your local shops are anything like the three I have here, some items that I need to buy are are double and even treble the price of Tesco so they are what I concentrate on buying.I also do surveys for a company and get tesco vouchers and collect my clubcard points and use them every couple of months too.We also fill up with petrol while we're there as it can be 15p er litre cheaper than where we live

I do try and support the local shops,I buy fresh milk, fruit, free range eggs and veg when my tesco stock has gone until I can get over there again. I know you have to use them or lose them kind of thing, but they are way too expensive for me to use exclusively sadly :(
