  • I'm well set into middle-age as I find it infuriating when people use the word 'hit' in the past tense. "He hit me", surely it should be hitted?

You might find your infuriation better directed at yourself ;)

The past tense of 'hit' is 'hit'. I've never come across anyone using the term "hitted", and my research indicates it is not a word in standard English.

My grandson would use such a past tense, he must have been reading "Chomsky".

When he starts at primary school in the Autumn, he will have such nonsense drummed out of him.

[Being serious for a moment: As native English speakers, don't we owe a duty of care and understanding, both to the language and to the millions (billions?) of poor devils who have to learn it as a second language?]

[As the parent of a handicapped child, I know that there are parts of the brain intended to process language. They have to be grown/trained in the period of 8 months to 8 years. After that the child should know its "mother tongue" (if she does - beware of au pair girls) and will find acquiring other peoples' mother tongues much more difficult.]

Obviously the point i was making about 'text' as the past of 'text' went completely over your head. Better luck next time.

Oh I see - you're complaining about the construction of the English language and not people's misuse of it (which is what I thought this thread was about?)

    Truly you are a pedant's pedant! :D

Actually, I was, in a roundabout way, offering 'hit' as the precedent for 'text', which Andrew_BT was complaining about.

Oh, ok :) In my daily life I try to avoid any hitting or texting so the issue doesn't normally arise ;)

I agree. When you tell people what you have been doing, it avoids awkward past tenses.

Some of my pet hates include:

    1. "It cost me 300 pound."
    2. "I got off of the bus."
    3. "So I says....then he says....so I says."
    4. "That was a damp squid."
    5. "I had a lovely desert."
    6. "The hotel room had complementary mints."
    7. "We were all there, accept Mark."
    8. "We'll need to altar that."
    9. "I want to loose weight."
    10. Treating 'disinterested' and 'uninterested' as the same word.

I'm sure there are many more, but if I ponder on the matter I'll probably start foaming at the mouth.
