I really hate 'yourself' or 'myself'. It's the way salesmen use it to make them sound educated.

"I've just sent it to yourself. Can you sign it and send it to myself before noon" ARGGGGGGG!!!

I hear there are counsellors who can help you with that. :D:D
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

    "At this moment"
    "At this time"

How crazy is it to say "At this moment in time"
I guess that the phrase was first used by a commentator at a live event an event being broadcast live where nothing much was happening, but a cmmentary was still required. Never mind the tautology, feel the width.

  • Love the thread. May I add my personal gripe? People say that they will "try and do something" instead of "try to do something"? The problem is now so common that one even sees the phrase used in written media too.

Many commentators seem to be fond of saying "We are in unchartered waters/territory" rather than "uncharted".

I found this list and it made me smile...

Why the english language is difficult to learn:

    9) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.

    /B]

Were they all sitting in a row when they were rowing about rowing?

Yes, but the point is they have completely different meanings. It's the same with present (here, now, current) and present (gift).

I thought the point was that words that are spelled the same but pronounced differently were what made English difficult to learn, not words that are pronounced the same but have a different meaning. When I taught English in Italy, my student particularly struggled with (to) live and live (event).

"Newkiller" is a popular variant - though it's not popular with me!
  • This is my bugbear. If you dont precede your sentence with "to be honest with you" am I to assume then that you are lying?
