I did one from my slow cooking cookbook and it was a real success! Made one a few months ago as a tester (takes 6-8 wks by the time you drip feed it the brandy) and everyone asked for the recipe. Guessing it might not be much use at thes late stage tho.........

  • Thanks everyone.

I made Delia's recipe yesterday evening, and left it covered in a cupboard which I'm going to put in the slow cooker tonight.

    A few questions:

The recipe is Delia's Classic Christmas Pudding (for 6)

I'm planning to cook for 12 hours tonight on high, leave it out to cool tomorrow, and then cook again for 5 hours in the slow cooker on Christmas day (will put it on warm for any time after that).

    Does that sound ok?

Also the recipe calls for 2 layers of baking parchment. Will greased, greaseproof paper be ok?

Finally, have people used upside down saucers in their slow cookers, or allowed the pudding bowls to touch the bottom of their slow cookers?

Many thanks in advance, and thanks for all the input so far :)
  • good point jonny2510.....do you still put a saucer in the slow cooker for the pud to sit on?

I did mine several weeks ago and used an upturned saucer/side plate as a base for the pud....worked rather well!!

I put the pudding into the slow cooker about 3 hours before I want it - won't come to any harm if left longer - the hot water is surrounding it but not touching it.

    Enjoy ;)

  • Well I couldn't find a saucer to fit so just didn't use one.

Interestingly enough, after 12 hours on high, the slow cooker had almost "boiled dry".

Pudding looks ok so far, but we'll only know for sure tomorrow!

Good luck everyone, and have a great day :)

I cook my christmas puddings in the slow cooker - I just stand the pudding basin in the cooker, pour water upto the lip and cook for 12hrs. It has done me fine the last few years. I use a diabetes UK recipe - so healthy and not one purposely designed for the slow cooker.

I'd never heard of using a saucer in a slow cooker. As mine is a split basin (stupid design) it would be unlikely to fit!

  • I have already got Queen Delias Christmas cake done and I am now contemplating doing her christmas pud next weekend but her recipe calls for an 8 hour initial steam! I don't really want to have my gas on for 8 hours admittedly it will be on low so I was thinking of a 10-12 hour steam on low in the slow cooker. I can do this over night with the cheaper electricity.

Has anyone done this? It's a 2lb pud by the way. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Last year I cooked my Christmas puddings 1 in the pressure cooker and 1 in the slow cookier. I would reccommend the slow cooker, great results. I know I put mine in the slow cooker for about 12 hours and topped up the water about half way through and I prefered the one from the slow cooker rather than the one from the pressure cooker.
