BT changed my number without telling me

BT have appeared to have changed my home telephone number without telling me.

I began to wonder why the phone hadn't rung, then when I started ringing around I found that friends and family were telling me they had left messages and I hadn't rung back. I told them they must have rung the wrong number.

When my husband came home he was annoyed that I hadn't picked up the phone, it was time to find out what was going on.

We found that when we rang out our number showed up as a different number.

I am rather cross - should BT have told me they were going to change my number?

Is this number going to stayed changed?

Should I now inform all my friends and family of the change?

Has anyone else had this problem?

Are you 100% certain they have changed the number? It could be a simple crossed line in the PSP or Exchange.

    Hello Spike

No I am not 100% sure but, when I ring my old home number with my mobile it rings and goes to answer machine (but the home phone doesnt ring nor do the messages appear on my phone). If I use the home phone and ring out (my mobile, friends and family) another number shows up. When this other number is rung my home phone rings.

The only thing I can think of is BT has swapped the number.

has there been an occasion recently when the bill was paid late ( or even cut off for a few days )

are you a BT customer or are you with another supplier and assuming BT have changed it ?

I am a BT customer and we have phone and broadband with BT. We have direct debit for the bill. Bills have all been paid never been late or have a problem.

More importantly nothing has been sent from BT to say there is or has been a problem.

Ring BT and report it as a fault. It could be crossed wires at the exchange, but you're not going to get it resolved until you contact the company involved and let them know there is a problem. :)

I did try and report it online but no fault appears but shows up as the new number.

I have also rung BT - wasted a load of time and got nowhere. They can't quite understand why.

They confirm I have paid my bills, that my original number is the number I should have, no requests for any new services - can't explain it but do say when asked that the number showing at their end is the new number.

I find ringing BT stressful and a waste of time in general, no one seems to help they just pass it on to another department. Bring back the GPO!!!

I suspect, as Spike suggests, you have someone else's number - and they have yours.

If so, that someone else is making calls for which you will be held responsible.

You need to get someone at BT to take ownership of your problem and sort it out. QUICKLY.

Use THIS WEBMAIL FORM to report it.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Thanks Heinz - I have just filled it in and sent.

I have only just sorted out a problem with BT 2 weeks ago. They have been hassle hassle hassle.

I don't know why I am not in pieces all over the ceiling.

BT have just rang me to tell me that as far as their records go my number hasn't changed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to explain again to this chap what I had told the chap last night along with what I had written in my email to them. It all sounded completely alien to him as if he has just heard my problem for for the first time. Why did I bother to fill in the forms and ring up? What is wrong with BT?

I noticed they had to ring me on my mobile as no doubt there is no reply from the registered number.

Small tip to BT instead of wasting time on adverts, start investing in customer service and acutally coping with the customers you have.

If this sounds as if I am cross - I am more than cross.
