Broadband Slow after Sky HD installed

I have had a HD box installed and my broadband has dropped and is slower, The guy fitting it says it will slow my broadband down and that if i take the lead out sky will send me a letter saying i have to pay £25. Does anyone know where i stand on this? Spoke to AOL and they say it is down to Sky.

Thanks

I dont see how it should slow your BB down......have you got sky BB or another provider cause the only reason i think sky would slow you broadband down is if you have the new anytime+ service

Make sure the is a microfilter fitted on the phoneline to the HD if the HD is connected to a different BT phone socket than the broadband,if it is connected to the same BT phone socket, then make sure the extension the sky monkey fitted is connected INTO the phone port on the microfilter & NOT the microfilter connected into the splitter.

You don't need the phone line connected anyway after you have been in contract for 12m, unless you have Multiroom.
Spike has got it in one-a Sky box has a modem and requires an ADSL filter, even a Sky installer should know that!

reason it slows your broadband down is because he has probably connected it to your sky router for the "new" anytime + setup....it will download from sky via broadband the latest stuff you can view and also give you access to other "on demand" viewing....great if there's anything you want to watch on it...I have found very little!

so you may find that this is causing disruption to your download speeds...imagine a 700mb file being downloaded at the same time as you're surfing (easy way to check...see if theres a cat 5 cable connected into the back of your sky hd box, green socket I think and it goes to your router)
No two ways about this one: Anything Free is not a Basic Right..it had to be earned...by someone, somewhere

OP has AOL broadband, not compatible with Anytime +.
    Follow Spikes advise.
BTW Anytime plus only downloads programme content, on demand i.e when you ask for it. Other content is downloaded overnight via the satellite.

Hi, I also encountered problems with my Broadband speed following the installation of Sky HD earlier this week. I have ordered the tv, phone and broadband from sky and sky have LLU enabled at my local exchange. The TV was installed a couple of days ago and I have to wait just over a week before my phone and internet are enabled. However, I currently have phone and broadband with my old provider until that changeover takes place.

I normally got about 6mbps download speed and the day after sky hd was installed, I noticed that my download speed dropped down to an abysmal 500kbps. The engineer had put in a cable extension from my Master phone socket to my lounge. He also plugged my router and cordless phone into the extension he added. I checked my download stream in my router control panel when I noticed the slow speeds and saw that it had dropped from 7000kbps to 2000kbps. Clearly this was a result of the sky phone extension.

So I plugged my router back into my master socket and connected the sky phone connection into a filter and also plugged that into my master. I then checked my router stats and bingo, it went to 7534kbps! However, the IP profile on the line stayed at 500kbps and has stayed at that for 2 days now. I contacted my current ISP and asked how long it would take for the IP profile to reflect the new 7534kbps download stream. ISP said could take up to 5 days. So if your download stream drops, then the IP profile immediately drops the day after, but it takes 5 days for the IP profile to increase if your download stream subsequently increases and remains stable?

I thought ISP's can kill an internet session to try and expedite IP profile increasing? Is that possible to do at their end? If it does take 5 days for the IP profile to increase, then it'll be almost time for the sky phone and broadband switchover anyway. Is it true that sky broadband and phone on LLU doesnt use IP profiles so if my downstream is 7500kbps, then thats what speed I am liklely to directly receive?

Any advice, comments, suggestions or observations are all welcome.:)

Sky use DLM, this usually kicks off at around 4Mbps and will run for 10 days, during which time you should keep it plugged in and switched on.

As you point out you should never run a router off an extension unless it cannot be avoided. In that case the bell wire (pin 3)should be disconnected.

Yes,they can change the profile on your line. That normally takes 24hrs to come into affect but can take up to 72hrs.
Try unplugging the router from the DSL line when you go to bed & power off the router. That should clear any stale session in the exchange. (That's what we used to do at Sky)

I removed the bell wire over a year ago and as all the advice out there had suggested, my Internet speed and performance increased significantly. Thanks for the info about sky using DLM, will leave my router plugged in for the 10 days once the changeover happens.

I thought my ISP could as I recall them doing so in the past. However, I guess it’s no surprise that they are not currently being overly helpful as I will be departing them as a customer in just over a week. I’ll try your suggestion and unplug the router from the dsl and disconnect router from mains overnight and see if that helps any. Thanks for your help and views penrhyn and spike.

Some can,the problem is that BT don't want to allow third parties access to the exchange software so in a lot of cases it's done by sending an e-mail over to a guy in BT who's job it is to set line profiles all day...
