    Looks like you could still be using the wireless connection.( because you are still seeing the 54Mbps) Can you disable the wireless connection on the PC then try again.
    Sometimes the ethernet port is itself disabled if you are running off batteries.
    Do you know if you are on LLU, or BT.
    That gum you like is coming back in style.

    Sorry, using for using a TLA, LLU: Local loop unbundling.
    This is where Internet providers such as Sky talk talk etc install their equipment in BT exchanges. Usually these services are cheaper than those supplied over BT's network, and less subject to being throttled, as BTs network can get congested.

    Basically its not quipped for LLU!(still dont know what it means LOL) but for what its worth, i retried the ethernet cable and got 100mpbs! twice what i am getting on wireless.

    No you didn't. That's just showing you what your LAN connection max rating is (fast ethernet at 100mbps vs wireless g at 54mbps).

    You need to run an internet speed test to see what download rate you are getting, compared with when you were connected to your router wirelessly.

    Thats the speed from the pc to the router, as opposed to 54mbps wireless speed, sadly your speed from the internet will still be the 2.7 mbps quoted from speedtest.

    According to BT http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=25795 then Cafe Spice(I found their number from google) should get 6.5Mb-8Mb
