My letter says that there will be two magazines, one for normal programmes and one for sport. The total cost of these will be £3. I will be interested to see if and how one can cancel ones supposed subscription to these magazines.

    Mine says the same.

So are we going to be charged another £3 per month for this?

Yes you will be charged £3 but a discount of £3 will be taken off your subs, its a huge tax fiddle by Sky, my point is if we are now being charged for the magazine then our subs should be reduced by whatever they are charging us, think i will ring Sky later

I didn't realise there was a charge for these magazines ?? Mine go straight into the bin without even getting out of their wrapper.

If we are being charged to receive them, then there MUST be a way to opt out to avoid this fee ??

Sorry if I'm confused and this is all wrong ;)

Wins : McCains garden games set, 2xTickets to Alton Towers, Links of London friendship bracelet, 2xIdeal Home Show tickets, McFly album CD, Virgin Balloon flight for 2 with a case of ScrumpyJack cider and 2 ltd edition jackets, Powerboat racing experience, £50 Virgin voucher, Aerobie Pro flying ring & Rice Krispie squares, Tesco baby pack

I'm not sure if/where they get a tax benefit?

Previously, it was by treating an element of customer subscriptions, as being the zero-rated supply of the magazine, but HM Customs & Excise issued a new ruling, that closed that off in 1998.

Taking in to account that subscribers couldn't reduce their tv subscription payments by opting out of the magazine, HMCE concluded that the magazine was an "incidental and integral" part of VAT standard-rated broadcasting services (the sale of a tv subscription) and concluded that Sky should pay VAT at the standard-rate on the whole subscription price.

There's some information about it on the website of University College Cork here.

Thats why they have made the magazine seperate they dont have to pay vat on the magazine part
  • But does that mean that because they are charging you for them legally you can refuse to purchase them, after all, my contract with them is for the supply me tv programming and not worthless ad-ridden chuff in bags?

I thinking the same. Got my letter today telling me that they want to charge me £4.25 for three magazines I don't want. Should be interesting
