I think I started my car shopping when I was about 15, with the plan to buy a cheap one and then fix it up at the same time as taking driving lessons. For some reason I wanted a Nissan Bluebird, god knows why.

I think we were all idiots when we were teenagers.

    How old is your son?

I spend hours looking on autotrader and reading car magazines and reviews.....I have a car, which I like and as I've just bought I can't really get another one. Maybe, like me, he just likes window shopping?

If you are seriously concerned, have a look what sort of car he's looking at. That could tell you if it's for real or just looking.

Also, if he's not working and just doing his lessons, the insurance will be astronomical so I would say you're safe for now.....

Of course he wants a car, he knows it is the entry key to many a girls undies.
    Buy him one.

No don't buy him one, make him buy his own.... He'll be far less likely to wrap it around a lamppost if his own blood sweat and tears went into it!!
The younger generation need encouragement and aspirations, not everything handed out on a plate for them!

I had a fairly well off family, father was MD of a huge multi-national company, we lived in a £750'000 home. My first car was a £600 Austin metro, which I paid for myself and had to do a little bodywork on to make it look presentable (body filler and Halfrauds paint cans). I sure as hell appreciate the value of money and im also not afraid to get my hands dirty when it comes to maintenance!

I don't agree with anyone buying cars for their kids, it's like handing them a loaded gun, especially with young lads!

My 1st car was also a 1.0 Austin Metro, full of rust and rubbish. Cost £20, but I loved it and restored it as best I could. It lasted me (with quite a bit of maintenence!) a couple of years, and by then i'd saved enough to buy my dream car at the time - a Mk1 XR2!

You look after things much more if you've saved the money, spent the time and effort etc.
